Do you like trains?

Used to be the geek spotting as a kid & travelled on hundreds of trains all over the country collecting numbers, sneaking round depots etc before I knew better...

Caught a Virgin one one to/from Manchester/Birmingham NEC about 3 years ago for a conference, not been on one for 15 years at least. I was surprised they were so clean & on-time even changing at Crewe on the way back went seamless.

I'm coming in & out from Oxford for the game at Wembley if I get the same experience I'll be more than happy.

Same mate when I was a kid,dad took us all over country to the main depots, was busy in the 80's early 90's,great trips.......like you say, until we grew up !

Must admit though, although I did get most of the classes at the time,I never saw all the 08 shunters, impossible to see every one of those !

Manchester used to do cheap trips all over the country for £4.00 didn't really matter where we ended up, Perth, Ramsgate, Bournemouth etc used to be hanging out of the windows collecting all the time & my local line on Ashton Moss where we'd play footie (jumpers for goalposts) was regularly stopped mid game when the signals change.

Got all the 80's electrics & 47 Bush etc the shunters were fuckers tho I'd agree.

The innocence of youth.

My favourite.

I love working these.
Is that Burton Joyce station?

Enjoy getting the train, but the cost puts me off sometimes. Got to be in Reading this week; even booking in advance a return from Brum is just shy of £120 (standard class). Fucking outrageous when it will cost me about £35 in petrol to drive there and back. Also, when I go to London (usually about once a fortnight) if I book at the last minute (usually I have no choice) it can come to not far short of £200 (standard class). To me, this (along with countless other examples) demonstrates that the current business model isn’t working for the greater good.

Prefer getting the train to driving, not least because I can work on the train, which suits my lastminute.com working MO. I know things were far from perfect under British Rail, but that was nearly 40 years ago; many things didn’t work back then - public and private. The railways can’t be currently run in an efficient manner or I wouldn’t be eschewing getting the train to Reading because of the prohibitive cost. The railways and rolling stock should be in state hands and fares set at reasonable prices. This would mean people had more money in their pocket to spend on other things, to the benefit of the wider economy.

The current situation is a fucking disgrace.
