I'll risk naffness and quote myself from a couple of years back on the topic of City Left Backs. I believe the record is something like....

Delph - Frequent Liability
Zinchenko - Just not good enough in defence
Danilo - Really bad at LB, can't really defend full stop.
Kolarov - Permanent 'weakest link' and fan target. Soft, slow, etc.
Clichy - Shite, can't pass, same defensive mistakes as Delph, therefore worse.
Bridge - Worst buy in a decade.
Garrido - Weak as piss.
Ball - Poor. Baloon gate.
Ben Thatcher - FFS
Stuart Pearce - 39 years old.

And now Mendy, who has at times resembled an actual, trained, professional circus grade clown, when required to defend.

It's our worst position. Tactically, LB is frequently the weakest, most exposed link in many teams, not just us. But without either Barry or Fernandinho, (and then, without a true left sided CB), we simply don't cover it.

BUT BY ECK CAN WE BUY ANYONE WORSE THAN THIS LATEST ONE?

(Probably)

We’d barely get a tenner for him on his wages, with current form and injury record.

we either need to invest more time into him to prove himself and put up with days like this, or try and loan him out to a french or Italian team and see if he picks up some form to either sell him or bring him back.

at the moment it looks like Mangala again and a case of trying to loan him until his deal expires.

How much realistically we could get for him?
£25m? £30m we are still taking a massive loss on him given he hasn't played that much.. Even Angelino isnt the answer and even Zinchenko isn't. Zinchenko can be back up.

Loan to some average French team is probably the best we can hope for

We never replaced Nicolas Jensen

We won’t get a penny for him. He’ll be loaned out on deadline day each year until his contract is up in 2023. No team can possibly look at him and decide to allocate part of their budget towards signing him.

I was literally about to post this. Not sure if you’re taking the piss but you’re absolutely right.

I’m half serious. Obviously he couldn’t still play as he’s probably 40 odd but from memory he wasn’t the quickest but pretty solid and reliable enough going forward

I can’t quite remember the circumstances in which we sold him but I think I remember that my thought at the time was it was an unnecessary sale

Basically, if we had a left back with his qualities, he’d be in the team

Yeah I wasn’t advocating actually bringing back Niclas Jensen lol but we’ve struggled at left back since him and he’s the sort of left back we’d want now. Still love his goal against Leeds.

I was sat right behind the net that went it. Wonderful goal

Why did we sell him? And who did we replace him with, Tarnat?

I can’t remember actually. Think he found himself on Keegan’s hit list and that was the end of it.

to be fair top left backs are hard to come by, if you consider how many there are and how many you’d put in a team of the decade.

We sold him to Dortmund for £750k in 2003. From memory that is when Tarnat and the rest of Dad’s Army came, Fowler, McManaman, Siberski, Sinclair etc. The beginning of the end for Keegan

You missed off Granville- he was awful as well :)

Was a good signing and before very early injury his crossing and interplay was excellent, absolute liability at the moment - slows the play down with his sideways or backward pass, barely bombs forward and pings it across which was his strength. Injuries finished him at the top level, probably, hope not but not looking good.

Kolarov was a class above Mendy and all those you listed.

Also Ball was a good servant for us as was Clichy although he couldn't cross the ball.

Plus, I wouldn't write off Zinchenko yet. We've done well with him in the team so far.

Not really fair to include Zinchenko as he isn’t really a left back. He has done ok. Not this season though. Before his injury he was equally as shit as the other two. I wouldn’t expect too much when he comes back but he can’t be any worse than Mendy.
