Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

A Hotel in conjunction with the arena should be a real possibility. 1 is enough to start off with. If one is built, I hope it won’t end up being a Travel Lodge or a Premier Inn. Something more up market would be better. There are plenty of Hotels chains around the World that don’t have a Hotel in Manchester yet. A Hotel tower with a bar and restaurant at the top giving panoramic views of the city centre and Manchester would be a good idea.
Was thinking something like this myself, Crown Plaza attached by walkway to the SECC , in Glasgow

Think it was just ideas being banded about. Certain forum members may know or have an inclination. A Hotel has been mentioned as part of the NS redevelopment. But Chelsea’s two Hotels that form part of a stand haven’t been viable, and we’re going to be demolished as part of the plans to redevelop Stamford Bridge.
At City Matters we've pushed the idea of a covered area behind the North Stand, similar to the Wembley Boxpark, with the store and a food court/bars inside. It could in theory be done as an intrinsic part of the NS expansion as an integrated structure.

Would it be viable having 2 Institutes of Sport competing against each other?

Think it was a flawed idea from the start, bar being a brave idea.

MU did right by keeping it on the University Campus along Oxford Road.
Although what they have gone for looks very small scale to me. Integrating your sports campus with the HQ of football clubs, and athletics track, Sports HQs in general would have been a good idea too, but would have required a lot of investment. It would have to be a stand-alone campus because of its distance from their other sites. MMU are just refurbishing an existing building on Oxford Rd that's next to a pre-existing sports centre so it's a low budget, low risk option.

Arena is surely going to trigger a hotel.

How many hotels are there around Old Trafford? I think there's Hotel football and a Premier Inn?

There was talk a couple of years ago about Man Utd expanding Old Trafford but that is surely going to die now. You can't expand a ground when your attendance trend is down.

This would be superb. The club have really missed a trick with revenues. There is nowhere for non-corporate fans to get decent food and drink at a winter nightmatch. Coming straight from work to the stadium is a nightmare. With an arena in use six days a week it's a no-brainer. We should consider a smaller one for away fans at the South end as well. City Square is great when the sun's shining!

Exactly what we need, a place for several thousand blues to go before and after a game.

Such limited infrastructure around the ground - really good opportunity for the club to monopolise income from pre and post match food and drink. Just need to do it properly.

Exactly what we said to them. Bring in some craft ale & gins, pop-up, one-man-band food offerings that are a bit more distinctive than the normal football fare and give people an excuse to get to the ground early and spend the money they might otherwise spend in town or the local pubs. The interesting thing is that the arena will have a food mall and they're considering having it open on non-event days. This really could be a huge turning point in terms of pre and post match provision.

I remember going to a game at Wigan a few seasons ago and parking on that retail park by the ground. No rush to get out afterwards (which was just as well) so we stopped there for a pizza.

This sort of development will also help stagger the number of people entering and leaving the stadum at the same time and so help to reduce transport congestion. It will encourage people to get there earlier. On a related issue why can't the club sort out a proper taxi rank at the stadium to get people away more quickly?

You went to Wigan and had a pizza? That's like going to Naples and asking for steak and kidney pie

Luigi's Chippy in Secondigliano. Gets a supply of Hollands Pies and does a great gravy infused with Barolo.

Plus the Italians are easier to understand as some speak English.

Surely a taxi rank would clog up the roads more and only take a couple of fans.

Not if it was organised properly. At present it is total chaos with taxis doing U-turns to avoid trams and buses at the Pollard Street junction. They should just shut that bit of Ashton New Road and only allow bus lanes, trams, and taxis. That's what happens in Germany. They could put a rank behind the former Mitchell's Arms site.

I do agree closing or reducing parking around the ground, with the exception of disabled parking, and setting up efficient park and rides somewhere is the way forward. Especially if events at the new arena clash with games and or we expand. Tinkering at the edges isn't going to acheive anything.

A lot of German stadia use park and rides and they seem to be able to shift thousands very quickly using buses and bus lanes. Surely if City, the police, and the council could have a proper discussion they could sort this out. There only seem to five or six buses parked up to take people to town. Surely there should be scores of them and they should be free of charge. I don't think there is any political will in this country to sort these issues out. They will have to sort it before the new arena is built.

Once again black cab drivers are doing as they please and clogging up Alan Turing Way on both sides of the road after the match. They are parking up en-masse, leaving their engines running, and are trying to out do each other to pick up fares, before doing u-turns and driving back to town. It's steadily getting worse this season. It never used to be like this after a match. Once one black cab driver does it, get's away with it, the rest follow. The council needs to sort this out. Alan Turing Way is not a Taxi rank!

Slightly off topic but heard today deansgate will be pedestrianised within 5 years.
