  • A UK paramedic has tested positive for the coronavirus
  • The manager of Leicester City FC has said some of his players are showing coronavirus symptoms
  • Greece has reported its first death from the illness - a 66-year-old man with underlying health problems
  • Austria has recorded its first coronavirus fatality after a 69-year-old man died in Vienna
  • Iran has said there have been 75 more deaths in the country, bringing the total to 429
  • Poland has reported its first death from the coronavirus, authorities in the country have said
  • South Africa, where there are 17 cases, has reported its first case of locally transmitted coronavirus
  • There are now 2,078 cases of the virus in Germany
  • Slovakia will close all schools for 14 days
  • Spain's parliament has extended its suspension for 15 days
  • All schools, universities and nurseries will close for two weeks in Lithuania
  • The NBA basketball season has been suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic
  • Spain has suspended all its La Liga football games, according to reports in the country
  • Norway is considering closing several of its airports, according to airport operator Avinor
  • Mass gatherings of 250 people or more have been banned in California
  • Kazakhstan has suspended all public events in a bid to stop the spread of the virus

I know Poland is shutting things down as I'm due to move there next week. Given the medical needed to work there, I'm not surprised they've shut things down so quickly. Schools and museums etc are closed and my company has said if you have kids, here's a free 14 day paid leave to stay at home

Good summary!
But the herd immunity will build-up anyway, just a bit slower if we avoid all unnecessary gatherings.
Even Boris said they want to keep the curve flat to help NHS manage severe cases.

Bottom line Germany have a similar strategy as England. We are a bit ahead and picking up strict measures as the curve is going steeper.

Boris' hesitation is indeed difficult to understand and I hope to get advice from German experts about his strategy.

All major US sports are suspended, I didn't expect that so quickly.
Won't take long til Boris has the next pk...
Thanks mate.

I’m not really sure your curve is going steeper.

We have about 600 “confirmed” recorded cases.

But Mikel Arteta has it. 3 Leicester players have it. Benjamin Mendy’s brother has it. The Nottingham Forest owner has it. At least 4 MPs have it.

There’s absolutely no way all of those high profile people are among 600 out of 60million.

We’re being bullshitted.

You can add a fat X for mass gatherings in Germany, also sport events, public theaters and operas.

Merkel today clearly called the nation to cancel every.single.unnecessary.event you can think of,
also below 1,000 people involved. She was being crystal clear about that.

School situation being discussed tomorrow, but in our federal system she can't decide and federal governments try to find a coordinated solution, maybe depending on regional infection rates.

Most probably, but who can say with that low number of English tests...

But Boris' only explanation for hesitating is you still being in the flat curve before steepening.
Actually, how can you know without proper diagnostics?

Exactly. Callum Hudson-Odoi from Chelsea just been confirmed as having it too. Actual cases are likely to be in the tens of thousands already.

...and likely around 100,000 in Italy.

But, what really is different and refreshing in corona times,
the level of information by fantastic experts in live tv sessions is fantastic.

Thinking about other problems to solve we should regularly get experts to the mic and not politicians
who defend their own chair or their political party for power or money.

We definitely have to learn from this crisis and that is managing them on an expert level.
Gives you a good feeling of security that decisions are made by people who know their trade.
That also requires a transparent and honest level of information, which I right now find really good, at least over here.

I would say as of today, shit has finally filtered through to the masses, pretty funny, only because I feel fairly well prepared for most things

Yeh I do understand where you’re coming from.

It was actually refreshing to see Boris deferring to experts instead of just the bluster and soundbites of the Brexit and election campaigns.

The two scientific experts were both very impressive. But I can’t help feeling they’ve been asked to present a united front because the NHS is absolutely crippled and they’re managing two crisis’ - coronavirus and an underfunded NHS.

Perhaps people will now accept that if realy fit healthy young men can get it get it then so can we

Justin trudos wife has it and is also to self isolate

Indeed, so much more the choosen strategy is mind boggling. Let's hope it comes good somehow.

I am sure the italian lockdown still allows you to leave your house and visit shops for food and walk the streets, it has jist restricted people from using transport systems and being in any sizes crowd or standing close to each other.
Cafes and bars are open till 6pm curfew

I expect a lock down wouldn't stop you going out, but would stop mass gathering.

I think this myth a lockdown means you are stuck in your house going stir crazy is being over egged to back up a lack of action tbh.

Italians locked everything apart pharmacies and food shops day or two ago. No bars open.

I don't understand one thing about UK strategy. BoJo says UK is currently in delaying the outbreak phase. How something could be delayed if you're not doing absolutely anything to stop or limit the spreading? Everything goes on as in normal times, yet it's delaying phase???

It's mind boggling mate, I was just watching the news and the USA have cancelled the NBA and all these big sports events, Disneyland is closed and so is Broadway, they have banned flights from Europe and other places, why is the UK doing nothing?

Seriously crazy or even fishy. They are either in the search of glory to do things nobody else does and eventually becoming heroes if successful, or there is something very fishy behind the scenes.

The anti-malarial drug which was referenced in today's press conference is almost certainly hydroxychloroquine I referred to earlier. This is being investigated as a possible treatment. There is a suggestion that if you take this you could prevent replication of the virus in your body. I don't know if there have been trials but it's been done in-vitro in the lab with good results.

BBC report "Drugs including those used to treat malaria and HIV are being tested, while researchers are working hard to develop a vaccine." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-51632801
Well there is an irony for me. I have been taking hydroxychloroquine for many years to help control rogue proteins, i.e. rheumatoids. Long term they can have nasty side effects, harming eyesight and causing muscular problems. I have just been advised to drop them.!

It’s at least one magnitude more lethal than Flu.

There is zero population immunity to this (unlike like the Flu), meaning that as many as 50-70% of the population could catch it.

That’s 50m people.

If it’s lethality lowers to only 1% of those infected (WHO currently still saying 3.4 although we hope and expect that to drop with time) then that means 500,000 dead. Or 10 lots of the Etihad to look at it another way.

Even if you take fatalities out of the equation, 15-20% also require hospital treatment meaning 10-15m could end up in a hospital with it (if left unchecked without measures taken to reduce the contagion spread). If that happened in a short space of time then the NHS would be crippled and many others could die as a result.

Out of morbid curiosity, what made you think it’s only as bad as normal flu?
Thanks for replying.

I guess I'm a victim of the way this is being reported; I honestly feel that the media can be condescending to the public in many situations as - despite having Radio 4 and Radio 5 on for a decent part of the day, every day - I've heard little in terms of actual statistical information that gives true clarity on the rationale behind our collective response to the virus. I do, however, appreciate that we are in uncharted territory so the evidence will be full of holes at this stage.

My reasons for thinking is no worse than flu have come from some of the stats that I've looked up, such as this from the Full Fact fact-checking website:
https://fullfact.org/health/coronavirus-compare-influenza/
"These figures suggest that over the past decade in the United States, the percentage of flu cases that resulted in hospitalisation has consistently been between 1% and 2%, and the percentage of cases that resulted in death has been between 0.1% and 0.2%."

However, it does also state that, "...current evidence on the new coronavirus suggests 15% of all illnesses are severe infections, requiring oxygen, and 5% are critical infections requiring ventilation. These levels are “higher than what is observed for influenza infection”."

Having read a bit more, it does look like there are early stats which agree with your premise, i.e.:
Mortality rates also appear to be higher for the new coronavirus, although the WHO does warn that the “true mortality of Covid-19 will take some time to fully understand”. Based on current data, the crude mortality rate (the number of reported deaths divided by the reported cases) is between 3-4%—although the actual rate, when including mild cases where people do not get diagnosed, is likely to be lower. Globally, for seasonal influenza, the WHO estimates the mortality rate is usually below 0.1%.

This is basically the info I've been looking for, so this conversation has been useful in prompting me to delve a bit deeper. Surely, though, with everything in the media recently, these simple stats should be presented more clearly? [/Anti-media rant]

Seriously crazy or even fishy. They are either in the search of glory to do things nobody else does and eventually becoming heroes if successful, or there is something very fishy behind the scenes.
The emeritus professor in the epidemiology of infectious diseases at the University of Nottingham said the measures would help contain the spread of the virus. Plenty of other experts saying similar and reading up on it I understand the logic behind herd immunity. Nobody is being forced to go to mass events, they can choose to stay at home if they wish.
