COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Any kind of flu virus will kick your arse. I had seasonal flu in the mid-90's and it pretty much floored me for a week. I have never felt so ill in my life. It took me about a month to get back to normal. If you have a weakened immune system or underlying medical condition, then you should be very afraid.

There was a vaccine for Swine Flue (H1N1) within around 6 months. With COVID-19, a vaccine is at least 12-18 months away.

I think there will be a vaccine quicker than some people think. Whether they can get it mass produced and available to everyone is another matter though.

I’ve got a couple of big jobs tomorrow and then I’m done and expecting not to resurface until mid-April at the earliest. Hope the mitigation measures I’ve undertaken this week have been sufficient.

Will doubtless use this place as a frequent conduit for my neuroses wrapped up in gallows humour in the weeks ahead.

Trying to lay off the booze while I’m confined. Going to try and get fit.

Honestly pal ancoats has made me
Think is there anything in his post

Look, this is going to be shite. It's going to be really shite. Lots of people are going to die and it's probable that we (and when I say we I mean pretty much the whole world) won't recover from this for years.

But we will. We always do.

Uncontrolled fear is one of the things we do need to be afraid of though. Cool heads and rational thinking are what are required.

The latter part is the worrying bit.

Why is it so far away? Because it’s so different to other diseases?

It’s worth remembering as it stands right now, your chances of even getting it are extremely low. If you do get it then your chances of being very ill are low. If you get it and are very ill then your chances of dying are low.

All of that remaining the case is dependent on all of our actions though. It is our behaviours as a society now that will dictate whether the overall cases stay in the tens to hundreds of thousands (and so either less or considerably less than a 1 in 50 chance of getting it) or not.

The issue now is one of how best to influence behaviour to make sure that either stays the same or reduces. People have to isolate and treat every outside source and object as potentially contaminated. If we all do that (and stricter measures will come to enforce us doing it) then the vast majority will be fine.

We are screwed economically, as is everyone. That is recoverable though. Life isn’t.
