The worlds top sports and your opinion of the biggest icon

1. Football - Messi
2. Cricket - Jack Russell
3. Basketball - Michael Jordan
4. Field hockey - Callum Giles
5. Tennis - Sampras/Agassi
6. Volleyball - Misty Mae Trainor
7. Table Tennis - Boris
8. Baseball - Alex Rodriguez
9. American Football - Tom Brady
9. Rugby - Will Carling?
10. Golf - Tiger Woods
If you are picking Boris for No7, you need to change it to Wiff Waff.....!

Obviously all subjective to your age
As a 50 year old bloke, I have a little trouble with people who people nominate Maradona for football, as you never got to see him, bar a WC every 4 years, and the very odd occasion Football Italia showed Napoli, on a Sunday. There simply wasn't enough exposure, at that time.

So, as 50 year old

Football. Phil Jon..... sorry, Messi

Golf. Woods #

Boxing. Tyson##

RL Hanley or Langer... can't make my mind up

Cricket. Warne. You just breathed a MASSIVE sigh of relief, when he wasn't bowling

Then there's the sports I couldn't give two fucks about, but still have seen.

F1 Senna
Tennis. Samprass
Snooker. Hendry
Darts. Taylor (spits)
Athletics. Michael Johnson (he made it look easy)

# at the risk of contradicting myself, because of age, I'd go for Jack (watching old, readily available repeats). He was playing week on week against legends, Watson, Palmer, Player, Seve,... Woods just used to beat up Mickelson, Els, Singh, etc. There's a world of difference

##again, because of age contradiction, I'd go for Ali. Again, in his time, there were greats. Tyson just used to hammer fat Yanks like Jesse Ferguson, etc. The heavyweight division was poor, when Tyson was in his pomp

Remember though it’s icons not who you have seen or thought was the best. Ali for instance pisses the boxing category whether you have seen him fight or not, same with babe Ruth or joe DiMaggio. I have never watched baseball and I never will but I know them two. That’s the sign of an icon.

Rugby - Lomu
Basketball - Jordan

Good list football is a tough one

I thought about that one for very long.

Messi’s lack of achievement in international football made me think twice.

Maradona’s drug scandal keeps him off top spot for me.

Pele is overrated.

I was thinking Cruyff for his ideas to football.

I might actually change it to Cruyff.

Field hockey? Is that before you flood the field and let it freeze over? Ffs. There's only one type of hockey and it's not played in a field (well, maybe a field with a frozen pond in it). And the answer is, Wayne Gretsky.

Your opinion should be most iconic not necessarily the best, I have not searched for those more obscure sports and have just been honest and admitted i know fuck all about them, you can only be classed as iconic if non lovers of that sport have heard about of you.(imho)I reckon the younger you are the more difference there will be compared to us mature posters.

1. Football - Pele
2. Cricket - Don Bradman
3. Basketball - Michael Jordan
4. Field hockey - No one
5. Tennis - John McEnroe
6. Volleyball - no one
7. Table Tennis - Desmond Douglas
8. Baseball - Jo DiMaggio
9. American Football - William the refrigerator Perry
9. Rugby - JPR Williams
10. Golf - Jack no Tiger no Jack no Tiger fuck it Tiger Woods edges it.

I am sure many won’t agree with the list of sports but there was a big criteria and it’s interesting having table tennis, hockey and volleyball in there.

Field hockey dont know what that is.
Tennis Sampras.
Volleyball dont know any.
Table tennis no.
Baseball never heard of any players.
American football load of shit.
Rugby joana lumuo or how you spell it.
Golf tiger woods.
Biggest icon easy.
Ali the greatest ever icon

Bristow was more consistent. Jockey was just the bollocks when on top form and I loved watching him - he was such an emotional guy. Loved him; loved The Hurricane.

Yeah some rogues become icons others just twats. I always wanted John Lowe to beat Bristow but Bristow was an icon without doubt

Definitely, think I just miss the days of Jocky, Alex and how things were simpler then. Black and White portable telly next to me bed, glued to the darts, snooker. Higgins was the greatest player I've ever seen - on his day. But those days were so few and far between. People forget he won the worlds in '72 then again a decade later. An utter twat off the baize apparently but all was forgiven (by me anyway) when he was on his "A" game. Greatest frame ever (check out the blue he pots 3 mins in):
