COVID-19 — Coronavirus

It's always been about the resources required to put football on (medical staff, ambulances, tests etc) and how this is detrimental to the rest of society.

I think that is becoming less of an issue maybe and has to be balanced by the well being watching football again may have on peoples general mood and sanity. Summer football may have a huge feel good factor that does more good than bad. I am fairly ambivalent to it either way but I am certainly not totally against seeing it come back if it can be done. Certainly not for the matter of Liverpool winning it. That it neither here nor there to me in the scheme of things.

You are absolutely correct. Finger trouble in the sum function.
Here is the corrected data:

I will leave the original as I don't mind owning my mistakes.

Thanks. Still really interesting table.

I can't see 20 squads of highly pampered players sending the UK over the edge.

It's far more significant to us all when volumes on the tubes and trains start to pick up which they will when workers go back to work.

Would it be fair to say that the comments about the football are not really comments about football but about ending the lockdown and express anxiety about doing so? The mantra has been stay at home, save lives. And now people have to hack something new. That is after all why for weeks the UK coronavirus task force refused to spell out plans for easing the lockdown as they felt it was a contradictory message.

Astonishing point on Ch4 news tonight.
80% of COVID-19 patients remaining in hospital are under the age of 40!

I went with all cause as that is the flavour of the week. I^ve corrected the data too as it was pointed out that I had fucked up.

When you look at the age profile for Flu it effects the very young as well as the old whereas covid leaves to young alone. I will do a direct comparison of covid related vs ILI when I have the time as I'm sure Ive seen age related Flu data somewhere but it's hiding from me right now and I have youtube videos to watch ;-)
I saw something today (probably on the Guardian or BBC) which looked at regional all cause mortality in Italy. The reporter said that Italy had significantly underreported mortality particularly in Lombardy but that Rome actually showed a deficit in mortality. That perhaps shows the difficulty of using past trends to derive Covid19 mortality.

The population is infected. You have to find a way to deal with it. 'Cycling' is how I think it will be approached.

How does footballers training put you, or me at risk? It's low risk for society because it's a closed group. Opening primary schools, which is being reported as an option for June 1st, affects everyone as it has the potential to affect R0.
Sigh, players and staff get close during training, you can test negative in the morning and positive in the evening, many scientists say that, they are in a closed group till they get in their cars and go home to their families, are you going to tell kevs pregnant wife there is no risk? when games start i don't need to tell you about the contact they have, the injuries leading to them going for scans or hospital treatment, are they going to test the ball boys and the other 300 they need for a match day staff,we know a large amount have it but no symptoms and are spreading it,we are told no close contact with anyone outside of our households but they can get back to training??

Italian stats for March released. Shows the importance of lockdown/suppression.

Pretty much confined to the North.

Where are the residents from the care homes? They are the population I feel truly sorry for. They have been neglected, and that's not a comment about he UK but a comment internationally. They are the obvious target for the virus and yet even now no country seems to have worked out how to protect them. The other group badly affected are migrant workers.

Well the number of younger people with no underlying issues that have been dying has increased a lot, frontline staff who are fit and working are getting seriously ill as well and yet some don't want to believe it

‘As President Trump presses for states to reopen their economies, his administration is privately projecting a steady rise in the number of cases and deaths from the coronavirus over the next several weeks, reaching about 3,000 daily deaths on June 1, according to an internal document obtained by The New York Times, nearly double from the current level of about 1,750.’

Christ. How could they even think about opening stuff back up again if that’s even remotely true?
Another way of looking at that is an additional 100,000 deaths by June.

Did they say why?
My guess having not seen it would be the need for convalescence after invasive ventilation. Whereas the older cohort don't make it to that stage.
From the rest of the article I would say you are right

It is a contradiction between stay at home and save lives. But that mantra is about to change. The cabinet/SAGE have signposted that. Football is a small aside to that.

The PL is more awkward than the CL to complete. In the CL you could totally isolate the players for a 2-3 week period and they would be a closed group. In the PL it is more difficult because it will take about a month to complete. They could if they wanted isolate the group. I have no idea what their plans are but it doesn't look anything like as impactful on society as a significant increase in economic activity which is imminent. You may not feel comfortable with it. Who is? But we have to see what the impact is and manage it because we can't stay in lockdown forever.

it is not just players though is it,there is a lot of people that are also needed, coaches, physio ,drs, kit men,it is nowhere near a closed group, why the rush, why do you want players you love risking a contact sport when everyone else is keeping their distance and will be for months yet,i don't get it,this pandemic is not a sprint,it is a very long marathon

Money, money, money, money, money.

And the other reason is money.

Its farcical. Football is not subject to different rules from anyone else.

I am not interested in whether the Premier League returns or not.

More or less every government across Europe including the UK has advanced plans to lift their lockdowns. Football is part of that and it's low risk in regards to us. It's a small group who wont be packing the tube or train, and whose conduct is completely irrelevant to R0.
