Running thread

Achilles injuries are can be difficult to pinpoint cause. Wrong shoes, overpronating, lots of hill running, sprinting can all be contributory factors. Perhaps landing heel first when his foot strikes the floor. Needs professional assessment.

Tell him your shoes might make his injury worse and to get a proper fitting at a running shop

My 17 year old is now into boxing and has been both skipping and running.
5-7 k runs the latter he can do in circa 30 minutes so it’s a decent pace.

Coming to the point , he suffered an Achilles injury around a month ago which he rested up and it improved.
He is still feeling it though.
He takes his conditioning extremely serious and we have converted the garage into a boxing gym so he is always on the bag.

Can anyone pass on tips on what you think maybe the issue.
He has blagged my newish pair of Nike running shoes but not sure he has the same gait as me.

Ta in advance.
How old are his shoes?

I play(ed) five a side football each week, and twice I've had persistent Achilles injuries. Both times it went as soon as I bought new trainers.

I’ve stopped even timing myself. It’s 40+ in the sun and wearing a mask makes it an accomplishment to actually manage to run the whole way.

Just completed some hill sprints, really tough conditions with the heat.

6 x 200m hill sprints with an elevation of about 8m, with a walk back rest. Think that makes the slope incline about 4%, it looked a lot more than that though.

I was still a bit sore from a 5miler yesterday but nice to mix it up today.

Hills for me today as well.

12 sets.

Drenched but worth it.

15 miles, starting at 7:30am and what felt like a grand tour of Cheshire. Stunning weather and conditions, but it had warmed up by the time I finished. I did a similar distance two weeks ago, but today, at a much slower pace, felt really good. My legs are suffering a bit now though.

I was fuelled by water at home, a banana at the start, and an energy gel after one hour, followed by another at the two hour mark.

I think I've earned a day off tomorrow.

I'm doing a long slow one tomorrow mate.

Prob 10k, which is long for me.

Not ran for a week or so, girlfriend has been doing exams at home so been taking her 5 year old out walking in the hills to give her peace and quiet, managed to finally get out on the bike and go a 42.5 miler with plenty of serious climbs in, back to the running tomorrow evening once it cools down now she’s finished.

Just to mix things up and check how I coped with a bit of quicker running I went out and ran a total of 2.5 kilometres split into 2 Sets.

No science or training schedule I have seen endorses but still enjoyable all the same. Managed it just under 10 minutes.

Back to a nice slow run tomorrow and another podcast.

Still doing my 3 stints per day on the treadmill most days totalling close to 10k. Upped my speed a little from 5.2 to 5.4Mph. I’m not arsed about breaking the land speed record and just want to get some weight off for starters. After finding to my horror the other week that my weight had mysteriously gone up a pound or so compared to the week before, it’s been going down ever since. Ordered a Fitbit too which is due today. No idea how it works but I’m sure I’ll figure it out.

I posted in here a few weeks ago when I was just starting out, still making the most of being at home and not having my usual commute but sad to say I have only done one 5k since. I have been out walking, normally 8/9k a day at least and also trying to get on the bike for a good 15-20k 2/3 times a week. When I run my knees just kill me, I am trying to focus on shifting some weight as I have convinced myself that my poor knees shouldn't be dragging my belly round a 5k and expect to be ok.

Had achilles trouble for years on and off, done a lot of boxing training which contributes to it. Skipping and planting your feet in the right position to throw shots can exacerbate the problem severely.

How did the injury occur ? Was it when running or sprinting or working the bag ? Did he rest it completely or was he still doing some exercise ?

I’m no expert but I’ve always found that keeping your calves strong acts as a protective shield to some extent. And any time he feels any tenderness get some ice on it or if his calf gets tight get some heat on it.

Sounds like you're doing loads! Walking and cycling are excellent aerobic exercise.
