Summer Transfers

If we wanted a true revolution in the midfield, selling Gundo and getting Aouar and Camavinga could be a shout.

KDB / Foden, Bernardo / Aouar as the 2 8's and backups - and dont forget Bernie and Phil can play wide with Rodri and Camavinga behind. Might help with a CB especially with Rodri being able to drop back. I think 6 mids for the 3 roles is ideal.

This said though, I wouldn't mind keeping Gundo as long as he were to only play 6/double pivot role. But selling and reinvesting might be worthwhile if there's interest

When we play against poorer teams that aren't good and will only sit back and counter, we can afford to push the 8's up and attack more. We dominate possession and chances because they aren't good at holding the ball themselves. Against better teams Pep will usually play Gundo with Rodri because he wants ball control. He needs both of them to play out from the back trying to be more in a 4-2-3-1 against dangerous teams that press well and are good with the ball like Real Madrid for example.
It can stifle our attack more and you can criticize Pep if you want for this, but he wants to control the game as much as possible. Ball control=more possession=the opposition getting fewer chances. It can backfire and he can be overly cautious at times, but Gundo also has the ability to be a deep lying playmaker from a 4-2-3-1. There are some games in which he wants Gundo to be both 6 and a 8. If he sees we dominating a team in their half Gundo can go forward and be an 8 or get into the box himself. Of course he's not the best 8, but I believe this is why he gets chosen more then people would like.
Good analysis. I’m a Gundog fanboy but I have to agree with those who say he can’t tackle well enough to be a traditional deep lying DM yet as you point out the more we control the ball the less we need to tackle so that flaw in his game is less of a problem.

All pretty quiet our end which I assume is due to the CAS case? Chelsea bulldozing on though getting things sorted!

I hate all these new Americanised English football positional terms derived from American football, sorry soccer.

Double pivot my arse: /

It's just a phrase used to describe 2 defensively/holding minded midfielders playing alongside each other, not exactly an americanised thing

Worth noting that Chelsea couldn't add any player to their team due to the FIFA sanction and they sold players like Morata and Hazard for high fees.

Therefore, it seems totally normal they are able to buy those players. They have the money and those deals were not particularly hard to complete because of Werner clause and Ajax understanding with Ziyech. All it took was convincing the players.

If they try to get wanted players like Sancho or Havertz, it will be a whole different story.

I'd be stunned if United sign this kid.

Almeda was at the campus with his agent last summer.

Think his club asked him to sign a new deal so they could then get some proper money for him.

I see no lure for a player such as Almeda choosing United over us.

Fred & Sanchez choose United over City.

Some players prefer the brand of United.

Also their manager is giving youngsters more minutes than Pep did.

Is that news about Kouassi choosing to sign with PSG Reliable?

Leonardo must've put in some great work if it true.
I saw the news published by Le Parisien. I can't say if it is true or not. A lot of things are published about our young players. For example, Adli going to London to sign for Arsenal and then he signed for PSG few days later.

Only thing we know for sure is the link between his agent and Red Bull system. It is why he is strongly linked to Milan AC lately too : the head of RB system is going to Milan.

Imo, it would be sensible from him to sign at PSG because he got a real strong playing time and he is liked by the current coach. Aouchiche didn't enjoy this same treatment and i could understand if he would leave in order to play more (Saint-Etienne would give him that).

I hope he signs because losing for free our biggest prospects is really upsetting. I have no problem if they leave after the club is adequately compensated (the price the club thinks they are worth).

Aye they don't hang around when signing players, not like us
Easy to sign players.
Ajax had always said they wouldn't ask an huge fee for their player and it was up to him to chose when and where he leaves.
Werner had a release clause and his club had no say in it. You just had to convince him and trigger the clause.

Chelsea had the money from Hazard/Morata and they didn't spend anything the last 12 months. Pretty different from other teams having invested last windows and hit by the crisis.

Yeah I wanted us to either sign him or him to stay at PSG.

Tuchel trusted him and you guys have about the same amount of CB we would have too, so barely any change playing time wise.
So I do hope it's true.

I do hope we are successful in buying out the rest of Michut's contract through.

Very very small but There is still hope!

  • the relationship is good between the player and the club
  • he wants playing time guarantees in the medium term
  • French football regulations limit the length of a first professional contract to three years
  • If negotiations fail with PSG, the player has selected two or three other projects that he is interested in, all of clubs with very big standing in Europe.
  • Only a nightmare round of final negotiations could scupper Kouassi signing professionally with PSG.
PSG's Centre-Back Depth:

Marquinhos (26) - Contract Ends 2024
Kimpembe (25) - Contract Ends 2023
Diallo (24) - Contract Ends 2024 | Left Footed
Kouassi (18)
Kehrer (23)
- Contract Ends 2023

With Thiago Silva most likely departing this summer and Thilo Kehrer seemingly untrusted and out of the main rotation. An Important decision to make:

1)Do PSG want to go into next season with only 3 starting CB(1 LCB & 2 RCB) and 2 "inexperienced" options? (Kouassi & Kehrer) OR

2)Do PSG renew Thiago Silva for 1 more season?
Would Thiago accept only a 1 year extension?(turns 36 in Sept.)
If he does, would he also accept being gradually faded to a bench role as the season went on? Considering the narrative of him underperforming in the Champions League? OR

3)Do PSG decide not to renew Thiago, but instead buy another experienced CB? But then that's 4 starters ahead of Kouassi(1 LCB & 3 RCB). Could important game time be guaranteed in the medium term?

Meanwhile If negotiations with PSG breakdown & if he chooses to join us, then his competition for the RCB spot in the medium term would most likely be:

Bastoni (21)
Laporte (26)
Sandler (23)

Eric Garcia (19)
Harwood-Bellis (18)
Kouassi (18) <-> Fernandinho (35) <- begin the Season as the Starting RCB and move to a bench role as the season goes on.m

I still believe!
