My thoughts too. They had to off load him to reduce wage bill and ‘move on’ football wise. This is a good way to do it by publicly stating they want to keep him but appearing to ‘reluctantly’ accept city’s offer....whatever that is eventually.

A court battle only damages the Messi legacy and does not assure Barca they will win...so there is risk

Surely Messi can say that he is buying his contract out, if there is a ruling against him ?

So at most, he would have to pay Barca for one season & we could agree to cover it ( preferably when he retires & visits Abu Dhabi).

He’d need his registration with the spanish league cancelled though , so Messi would need Barcelona agreement.

Seen a few items saying Messi approached us, I’m wondering now if that’s a deliberate ploy in an attempt to leave us out of the equation legally ?

Fair play to you tolmie,but as you have posted in the past about transfers,and I don’t want to be a doom and gloom merchant but a lot can change in hours never mind days,until messi is at the Etihad holding up a city shirt I’ll try and not get to giddy ...

If Messi stated his intention to buy himself out of his contract ( in the event it is ruled that his get out free clause is invalid) then the dispute must surely be between him & Barca ?

We would be signing a free agent & negotiating only with Messi.

I would have thought so.

Doesn’t FIFA article 17 allow him to do it? Due to the Webster ruling...

If he decides to just walk away and we signed him as a free agent, then FIFA ruled against Messi because his get out clause was invalid, we both would be liable for compensation and think we would also get a transfer ban as well.

Both parties must be 110% sure if going down this route otherwise it could backfire considerably

in regards the Webster ruling I’m not sure on the ins and outs of that or the potential timescales involved. Perhaps someone with better knowledge could lend an insight?
