The president would have likely asked him to come off as thankful to him in order to avoid him being blamed; and I'm certain he would already be at City.

i don’t think there’s anything clear about this. Just because his lawyers advised him their opinion that he could leave doesn’t mean they’re wrong. It’s the possibility of future legal action from Barca that muddies the waters, leaving no party clear as to the ramifications on future contracts.
