Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Messi was a free agent, we could sign him outside the transfer window, seeing as he has 'cancelled' his contract whilst the window is open ?
Imagine if he left Barcelona, trained with us as a free agent while a legal ruling was made on the contract and then came in November/December.

Well maybe because it's quite a big transfer and obviously people are going to be cautious given Messi's history?We have so many flappers on BM it's getting ridiculous.

I think that is the case, certainly happened plenty before. But, having him for the start of the season will still be the preference, club's and his, surely.
I'd like him available for the Golden Bus Parkers game if he's coming.
I believe Messi will be a City player, not sure if that is now, in Jan or next summer. I suppose it all depends if the criteria for City is that he has to come on a free transfer to make the finances work
