Other news from today before Ko :

Birmingham has clocked up 1009 cases in the last 48 hours. Most in UK over that time. Espect West Midlands Tier 3 calls to grow. Despite its case haul though its Pop score is less than Stockport as it is a hugely populated place and those thousand cases only increased it by 89.

Blackburn also added 369 over 48 hours - huge for there - taking its Pop score up a whopping 246 to 3218.

Bradford is the big story - three straight rises and 517 cases today. More than Manchester.

Liverpool just ahead of Manchester today too - 507 cases. And a Pop score rise of 101 up to 3235!

Knowsley though ahead again with 161 cases taking its Pop score up 111 to the highest in the UK at 3484.
Give over about the whole of the West Midlands. Dudley is nowhere near Tier 3 and may get to Tier 2 by the weekend with a few bad days.

What really needs to happen, is no travel unless essential beyond say 10 miles, this can be policed to a degree, by ANPR, even if not directly by the on duty police, it already checks for insurance and tax, so tweak it, check where people are going.

Obviously it won't stop neighbours visiting neighbours, but it would stop violations from one town in restrictions to another not. Won't catch all, but it would deter.

I've been working in IT for 25 years now and I've never seen an advert like that. Ever.

People who are able to "volunteer" with the skills they are asking for are seriously skilled people. Good ones who you'd want to do the job will have spent a LOT of time learning the job and will be in demand.

There's not many people around and the idea there's people with these skills who are furloughed - or even more incredibly, would do this for free - is laughable.

Even if you do find someone who can do the job, this is a job for someone who needs to oversee the work for years - not a volunteer who can do the odd day here and there.

It's either laughable, or a vision of the future.
Spot on GoatersLeftShin.

I know of someone who has nerve damage and is quite sick from the oxford vaccine trials
To be fair, you know of someone who has nerve damage, is quite sick and has been part of the Oxford vaccine trial, which is somewhat different. In time, you may well be correct, but there is no causal link, as of today.

wouldn't surprise me though. Rushing things through to have something even if it isn't done properly and will cripple people, more money in the long-run though.

If you look at the biggest week on week decreases not sure South Yorkshire needed tier 3 and Newcastle and the NE certainly don’t, so I’d imagine they’ll be in it by Monday. Also, all those Liverpool decreases have nothing whatsoever to do with tier 3, as they’re reducing before any effect of that. I would think that any sustained decreases will not be spun like that though, as this government would never play politics with the pandemic.....

And what if you have to travel for work in a field based role that cannot be done from home?

Do you work from home?

it’s upsetting no one has the energy now to appreciate the work all these doctors and nurses continue to do.
I agree but it is understandable.

As I suggested a few days ago in here the government could regain some goodwill (and it sure needs to do) by announcing that there will be a Covid Heroes day or some such that will be an annual celebration - perhaps they could choose the day lockdown started.

To come into force each year once the virus is gone.

And that all health care workers and others who were on the front line got a free extra days holiday with pay either on that day or another day in lieu.

Then on the actual day everyone else who knows a front line worker annually offers to help them - eg gardeners doing their lawn for free - or just offering one in your street to do the shopping for them if they are working. Just a small thank you as the theme of that annual day.

We should not forget them and something like this is the best way.

Someone will win an OBE for coming up with this idea no doubt out there and pressuring for it to happen as it is an obvious least thing we could do. But that should not be necessary and the government could win some kudos by saying it now themselves.

Unfortunately why do I cynically think that they seem more likely to tell in private someone like Dominic Cummings to come up with this as a 'brilliant idea' and give him a knighthood.

Sorry but this isn't right. normally it takes around 5-10 years to create and test a vaccine. Phase 3 alone is usually 2-4 years. this absolutely has been rushed.

Isn't that more for an effective 'silver bullet' vaccine (and we're told repeatedly that the first vaccines won't provide that) rather than the long term safety studies?
I don't know....just find all this interesting. I'm sandwiched between thinking a vaccines is only the only way out of this utter detritus of a virus (and for the most vulnerable first) and would I personally take a vaccine once the phase 3 trials have successfully completed.
