COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The Lancet study is very good news. And that vaccine approval will really be where we start to get to grips with this pandemic given its origin and ease of deployment.

Today has been a very good day for the world.

But it also the most dangerous day since the pandemic started with Christmas only days away especially. So many people will now relax their guard thinking the end is in sight.

Combatting that joy based relief that will bring complacency is as important as the vaccines. As long weeks still lay ahead where many can die if too many over relax.

616 deaths is sadly higher than I had hoped. Out of hospital deaths still a problem.

Should be a sobering reminder that the vaccine is not magic and saved no lives yet.

But cases down to 12, 282

If that's true then great.
But I don't see how the 90% efficacy can have been confirmed yet given the small sample size ( 2.7k) and the question over the age ranges included in that sample.
Unless AZ have increased the sample size but that would have meant extending the sample results timescale to end January to confirm the results?
Either way positive news.

Assuming there was no issues with age range and the sample is representative, then what size sample would you want? or, to ask it another way, what would be an acceptable margin of error for you?

Unfortunately that 12, 282 is not terribly reliable as yet another huge fall in test numbers.

They seem to have forgotten the word consistency.

Just 205, 315 tests to find those 12, 282 - so % positive is 6.0% - which is a red flag that the media will likely all miss.

The England total is 6.0% too - so there is no other country that is skewing data.

The lateral flow tests are up though in England from 20, 904 to 34, 488.

The Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine is safe and effective, independent analysis has confirmed.

Researchers say the jab will have a "big impact" on the coronavirus pandemic.

The study, published in the Lancet, is the first peer-reviewed analysis looking into phase 3 data from a vaccine trial.

Scientists working on the vaccine stressed the importance of "transparency" and data sharing within the scientific community.

What a brilliant day this is turning out to be

Absolutely fantastic - i have just tested negative again in spite being in a meeting with someone who tested positive on Friday! I must have some immune system.

Couldn't get vitamin D supplements in supermarkets for love nor money, went to pharmacy and bought some but just realise its high strength 25ug stuff. Conflicting articles when I Google it, seems best to take one of these every couple of days rather than daily perhaps? 10ug seems the standard amount.

Plenty at Holland & Barrett: https://www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/vitamins-supplements/vitamins/vitamin-d/ I read that D2 are recommended from H&B. They will probably have a 1p for second bottle for vitamins in the next few weeks. Supposedly best taken with zinc.

If you ask five different people for the recommended daily dose, you will get six different responses.

The study is here
A very quick look indicates the 90% efficacy is the point estimate with 95% Confidence intervals being between 67 and 97%

Secondary outcomes suggest the vaccine may also protect against asymptomatic infection – vaccine efficacy of 4% for those given two full doses, and of 59% in those given a half then a full dose. However, findings need to be confirmed. (5/6)

Thank you. I'll give H&B a look next time. Heard about Zinc too, sure BlueAnorak has mentioned it on here as being worthwhile.

Maybe you rejected the virus through your immune system, or the virus rejected you ;) Always good to hear of negatives.

No worries. Dr John Campbell has some videos on his YouTube channel about VitD that you may find interesting.

I took VitD on and off over the years. However, I have took it throughout the pandemic. I also take a multivitamin and an occasional spoonful of Manuka honey as it is good for fighting viruses apparently. Occasional as it was £40 for a small jar.

The Pfizer sample size was 40k approx.
The Oxford double dose sample was 17k approx.
The Oxford half/one shot sample was only 2.7k ( also as it was discovered by accident I think there was a problem about the age ranges included).
This sample size seems a bit on the low side for approval which I understand is why they're extending the sample size but this will need weeks to deliver results.
