It is 70% more contageous but they think no more deadly but more infections will lead to deaths and an overwhelmed nhs ,there is no upside to this situation

It is thought to be able to increase the R by 0.4 on top of the other strain
Its nowhere near70% more contagious if R has gone up between 0.4 and 0.9. - unless they are talking about modified infection rates with social distancing, hand washing and face mask usage in place.

A bigger worry is that our only vaccine is currently being manufactured in Belgium, the other side of the channel, so it's not clear they can get it through either if France stops goods coming this way, Eurotunnel has closed tonight.

There are plans in place to airlift it out with Military planes if required

Yes, I agree. It’s the only way out of this I think. All resources should be directed towards vaccinating as many people as humanly possible now. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Subject to supply.

I think this problem will feel a lot lot smaller if the Oxford vaccine is approved and it's confirmed to still be effective. The EU panic would of course also largely be reduced if their vaccines are also confirmed as OK.

We might see a change in vaccine strategy towards targeting the cluster?

Not strictly true. Much of the increase, at least down here of late, is primarily due to secondary schools. This probably explains why infection rates are particularly high for secondary school age children (they have to go to school) and those of an age associated with being parents of secondary school kids (mid 30s to mid 50s).
Same where I live in the latest available data, most infections were in 10-14 year olds, second most in 40-44 year olds.

Jeremy Hunt QUOTE in Independent that we are not due another shipment till March

true but this would also be the worst possible time for a no deal brexit right now. This needs to be put on hold for at least a couple of months.
The only issue is fresh food.
It may have escaped your notice but UK business has built up 2 months of stock for No-Deal Brexit.

We have this new strain, does Europe have it also? Did it evolve in the UK or was it brought in by somebody?

It is all very worrying and now we are basically being shunned by other countries. We should have closed our borders back in March and stopped people selfishly buggering abroad on holidays.
Cases in Denmark and some in the Netherlands. Not many so far but they don't have the equivalent of Porton Down - only Germany and France do. So it may already be rampant. Figures in the Netherlands of late are pretty bad so it's probably already escaped.

Spoke to my eldest son today, the wicked witch (his mother and my ex) who is public facing in people's homes and pretty high up in the NHS is having him, his Sister (not my child) his sister's boyfriend who are both from London & her mother in her house for a week, added to that she's holding an extended family buffet & party on Boxing Day.

There's little hope when a NHS employee does this sort of shit....and dead right I've emailed the authorities.

Disappointing about the date. I'd been told 18th and I know there was supreme confidence internally about that date, but the delay is purely due to manufacturing and supply related issues and as such we will have a good steady stream of vaccines as soon as emergency approval is gained.

Not really my business, but you should do the right thing then, she's not allowed to do that, and given her position she knows that she's not. "A week" was never allowed, and it's only for a day now.

Kids won't be fined but she will if the police pay a visit.

I read that that the pziefer vaccine was tested against early mutations of the virus and proved to be effective. Just posting to offer reassurance. I'm no expert. I fear the worst and look for any scientific hope.
