EU approve Pfizer vaccine saying no evidence it won't work against new strain.
Also USA rolling out Moderna vaccine now so millions more now getting the jab.
Two bits of good news on the global front.
With the anticipated approval of AZ vaccine later this month things could be looking up ( at least on the vaccine front) by the year end.
I think I read something about the new strain having mutations on the viral spike protein but that the (Pfizer and Moderna) vaccines will still be effective.

There is also some work underway looking at newer techniques for treatments using therapies based on bacterial defences against viruses (such as Crispr (cas13 mediated). No doubt several others too....so given time there will likely be combinatorial approaches available.

The government has so far been reluctant to close schools, with leaders saying it is a "national priority" to keep children in education.

But with cases remaining high among school-age children, questions are being asked about whether schools could move to remote learning.

"There's no plans for schools to close and it's rightly been a national priority for all pupils to return to school full time," the prime minister's spokesperson said.

Asked about whether school children could be prioritised for vaccinations, he said: "We've always said that we will prioritise those with the most clinical need and that remains the case."

fucking mad

The vaccine is not approved for use in children. I'm not sure of the exact status of trials, but typically you need adult data first before even starting, for ethical reasons. I think paediatric trials are just starting.

Hoping this press conference will be to say Brexit is on hold while we try to tackle this shitstorm.

Wont be though.

Partners younger sister has been told she’s got an extra 2 weeks school holiday in Jan now

mentioned it before but they really should move the school holidays around

there are 7 weeks in Summer, 1 week at Spring Bank, 2 weeks at Easter planned after the roll out of the vaccine to the vunerable

move a month of that to Jan/Feb and you’d cut transmission a lot

Absolutely this.

They should have taken 3 weeks off the summer holidays and 1 off the Easter holidays and added them to the winter ones.

2 weeks in October, 4 at Christmas and 2 in February.

Fucking mad that they didn't.

My poor teenage daughter has a Xmas job at Tesco’s and is today battling against panic buyers. Families coming in in groups of 6 or 7, splitting up and buying essentials in bulk. She spotted one woman buying the maximum allowed of Christmas staples, then coming back 5 mins later with a hat on try again.

So annoying.

Is there much transmission in Primary Schools or is it mostly secondary? My daughter is primary and only one class was sent home to self isolate between sept and Xmas.

My sister who is a teacher at a secondary has had a nightmare with both staff and pupils having to isolate all the way through.

I would have thought the risk from Primary is low as they don’t go out once school has finished.

The people supporting such whacky ideas mate, fall into two categories. (a) those thicker than pigshit and (b) those with genuine mental issues. Simple as that really.
Yep. The trouble is that these clowns used to be few and far between but the onset of social media means they now have a platform to spread their shite which in turn leads to many more people falling for it than previously. I’m loathe to call them all thick as pigshit because some of them are actually quite intelligent about other topics, but I suppose that makes it even more difficult to comprehend them believing it. I had to shut down a good mate the other week who was peddling all kinds of rubbish. He’s a sound bloke and he’s not daft - well not normally - and sadly he also posts on here. One of the things he was telling me is that the UK government has passed a law where they can confiscate your home, car, and pension if you refuse the vaccine. How anyone can think this is remotely possible when you consider that such a measure would have to go through Parliament before being ratified - and would no doubt cause universal outrage amongst the opposition, human rights groups, and the wider population - is utterly beyond me.

Just listened to a scientist on BBC saying that labs will be working on cultures of the new strain now and testing it with the vaccine.
So we should have some information soon ( likely positive).

Scientists telling everyone to stop flapping.

I got flamed earlier but I have no doubt this current hysteria has been stoked up by the UK government politicians (not scientists) simply as a justification for another u-turn and the shitstorm it has put us in as a result is unforgiveable.
