Political relations between UK-EU

I realise I am pissing into the wind with this but I'd urge any remaining Brexit Ultra to listen in to James O'Briens show played back 11am to 12 noon section. There you will her two British business owners - one a vintner one a cheese maker from Cheshire - to learn just exactly what the Brexit clusterfuck is doing and will do to thriving British businesses.

It's only an extra 1.2%. Compared to the extra 30% shipping and customs costs that people are experiencing it's neither here nor there. Now it's no longer cost effective to buy anything from the EU we won't be making many transactions anyway. These benefits just keep on coming.

It's a joke. Loads of stories all across Spain now talking about deliviries arriving from UK with a hefty tax/administration/customs bill. Loads of goods being sent back as people not prepared to pay it. An example of one I've just seen is a £90 goods order coming with a 42euro bill. Order sent back, everyone loses out.

British exporters sending to EU countries are going to die a painful death.

Another minor inconvenience experienced today.
I had a defective item from Google which I need to return. Google sent a replacement item with detailed instructions about packaging up the defective one and how to arrange for courier collection. Just done that and the confirmation email from DHL has told me not to package it up because the driver will need to inspect the item for customs purposes as Google's returns centre is in Poland. So I will need to remove the packaging tape and repack while the courier is waiting. It also means I need to be in and can't just leave it in a safe place. Just a minor annoyance in the scheme of things but one of many. If it takes a courier 10 minutes to collect an item instead of 10 seconds costs are inevitably going to go up. In this case it's Google that will have to pay but that ultimately will work its way on to the price of the product.
Thanks Brexit!

This is Lance Foreman - Brexit denier - oh and former Brexit MEP.............Why didn't his party point this out when campaigning for Brexit one wonders? Nice guy though. His comment on Grenfell was " you can't solve everything with money" yet here is is on the grift asking for govt money so solve a problem he helped to create.

I say grift as this is on his company website

We used his restaurant just across the river from West Ham before an evening game. Didn't know he was a Brexiteer. It is all beyond irony.

one thing I still find astounding is how those who pressed for Brexit ( they needed us more than we needed them brigade ) are now mortified when the EU treats a 3rd Country in the same way as they treat any other 3rd Country. There is still an element that think because we used to be a member which should qualify is as an ex-member to still use the equipment.

But it is causing problems in the EU (e.g. exporters losing business, caterers not getting langoustines). I don't think there's any way Johnson will contemplate that the UK overtly pay for access and the EU is not going to give us any long term arrangement that looks like membership privileges without paying the subs.

The EU does seem capable of getting round its own rules in emergency. I wonder if they could relax the paperwork requirements. It's paperwork that enforces rules that were not needed on 31 December and are not really needed now - not while we have the same standards. But (the unicorns are dead) what would be the mechanism for "for the time being" measures to relax some of the regs? And how could the UK disguise paying for the privilege? For the EU, it then becomes a disincentive for the UK to depart from standards. It also makes it potentially easier for a future UK government to normalise the arrangements (paying for access).

(Is this one of the few posts to fit the actual thread title? Though it should be titled the "now that Brexit is so obviously crap..." thread.)

Serious question, do you find the EU’s posturing this week about vaccines morally acceptable?

That’s open to anyone on this threa.

And vice versa...... £80 import bill on a £200 purchase from the Eu.....beware what you buy on Ebay and check any website to make sure it is a UK based company

It’s no longer our concern. All I know is that every time the EU has any difficulties in any area the Brexit fans will latch on to it as a comfort blanket to show that in spite of all the real difficulties importers, exporters, fishermen, farmers, small businesses and individuals are experiencing it provides justification for us leaving. It will become a regular event and will get boring very quickly.
