And they STILL have not caught up on the hospital numbers which have been below the first wave since Saturday and are even lower today.

But by the time the media report that fact who knows.

In double figures now the number of media reports since Saturday that have wrongly stated we are still higher than the first wave peak.

England went below last week and UK has been for days now.

The only reason COVID is bad is because the body has never encountered it before. All of the vaccines will provide protection from severe disease by giving immune systems a degree of awareness of every variant as an absolute minimum.

We know this is true because the virus cannot of evolved to avoid any of the vaccines because it has barely encountered vaccinated immune systems. We can prove this again by the very low number of reinfections in previously infected people despite a far more transmissible variant floating around.

The most likely result is the less vulnerable and young will be 100% protected from severe disease for the forseeable future whilst regular top up vaccines will be required for the vulnerable. Tweaking these vaccines and manufacturing them can be done almost immediately providing the fundamental spike protein structure of the virus does not change. The beauty if it does change is that the virus may become less transmissible and therefore less dangerous.

The J&J trial in South Africa tested for antibodies before the trial started. It showed no difference in infections on the placebo arm between those who had, and had not acquired antibodies ie been previously infected. Almost all the infections were with the new variant.

Evolutionary pressure to escape infection acquired immunity is likely to have driven the emergence of the SA variant due to the high prevalence of the original variant in SA. Escaping infection acquired immunity also is expected to help escape vaccine acquired immunity
 
Vaccination data

275, 956 first doses in England - up about 38,000 on yesterday

But 76, 000 down on last week and half of several days last week.

The loss of Pfizer supplies whilst they retool the plant in Belgium is biting across the UK this week.

But they seem to be using what Pfizer they have for second doses as there has been a big rise in those in all the nations today.

England with 6535 second doses today - up from 1915

Another week, another tabloid article saying a variant “could be” resistant to vaccines, just to destroy people’s mental health, with it being proven to be total bollocks in another 2 weeks time.
