My take on this is that they need these powers in autumn for a 'just in case' scenario, as autumn is obviously the time it can potentially come back. If they let the powers lapse they will have very very little chance reinstating them, given the Tory rebels and the national fatigue, so an extension bridges the summer gap.

Switching to cynicism for a moment, give people some summer freedom, lock em down again, find the balance between economics and control. That, of course, is unfounded and just the silly shit that swirls around my head.
No matter how paranoid or conspiracy-minded you are, what the government is actually doing is worse than you imagine. - William Blum

Next phase of Marvel films, although it is a retrospective as she perished on Vormir in Infinity War. It was for a good cause (saved half of the human race). Best Scarlett action is in Captain America: Winter Soldier (good film too).

It should have been released middle of last year. Available in the UK from 17 May.
Yes...knew she perished....but wondered why a new film was coming out (I understand why now).
Damn shame she's now more....them there leather pants...
Lol, I've posted this before, in my early 20's I was really attracted to a girl called Liz who I met for the first time whilst out with quite a few friends. I got chatting to her and after a few drinks I asked her out. She said something like, "you're a nice lad but you remind me of someone I don't like so I can't take you up on the offer"

My pride was hurt but we had a good laugh for the rest of the evening. When it was time to go home, Liz told me who I reminded her off, yep, Ronnie fucking Corbett. I'd been called Plug in my younger days because my teeth developed before I did but this hurt more. Biggest mistake I made was telling friends on a lads holiday after we'd had a few drinks.

I still get called Ronnie from some of the lads who were in on the story. TBF, I'm just over 5ft 5", wear glasses and golf jumpers, sorry to ramble on, just doing Ronnie proud.
Just realised I meant Ronnie Fucking Barker after reading your reply!!

Still, sweet & sour story there mate. But why did she not like lil ol Corbett....ask your producer....

Is it me or is still effin freezing out there?
It's not that cold is it. This long Covid is still giving me those chills along with the knackered lungs.
Royal bugger this. Hopefully called up for the vaccine soon enough and that helps clear the mofo from ones system.

That light at the end of the tunnel is now a big pair of fuck off fog lights coming from the opposite direction on the motorway. Optimism levels are bursting

Call me a cynic, but my guess is that Boris is teeing this up for the banning of international travel for holidays for this year. Of course, the odd trucker might bring the virus and a new variant over, but why should we get a big 3rd wave at the moment if very few people from abroad are entering our shores and we’ve also had a far bigger 2nd wave than the majority of western europe due to the more transmissible variants already having ran through the UK. Add to that our excellent vaccination levels, we should be fine.
I think Boris is teeing up an extension of the ban on foreign holidays (or placing lots more countries in the red list) and agreeing to divert some of the UK’s vaccine supply to the EU (the stuff being produced in the EU that is).

He’ll probably argue that avoiding or minimising a third wave in Europe is the best option for the UK, and he might be right. But movement on the vaccines would make things easier with the N.I. Protocol and a few other things too with regards to the EU.

Vaccine supply will be the big bargaining chip this year.

HOSPITAL DATA

Headline:

First hint of trouble today with some small rises - not uncommon on Monday.

PATIENTS:-

Patients up 9 in day to 4501 v 5976 last week :- lowest since 14 October.

Peak was 34, 336 on 18 Jan (fall 29, 835 in 63 days)
You're right, patient numbers in hospitals often rise on the Monday, just reflects admission patterns. Only 9 and down nearly 25% week on week.

Fed up tonight. That programme just really upset me. Lost a year of seeing my Dad and City and quality time with my kids and now the Mrs is upset as just found out one of her former work mates has today died of Covid age just 60. Been in hospital for weeks and thought she was recovering. Been utterly wank and I try and be as positive as they come. Very very mentally challenging this year.

fuck you Covid.

Well I should have been in Amsterdam tonight watching Cut Copy.

Have cheered myself today by buying a Bluedot ticket for the end of July. After 3 months locked away on my own, I can't wait.

Too much room and gloom round these parts. Not seen any evidence at all that the variants will beat the vaccine, even though our shite media make ludicrous claim.

Get yourself something to look forward to, good times are round the corner.

No point looking to politicians for solutions. They do what they are advised by people who are cleverer than they are. The unelected state machine. The Cummings of this world who have the brains to interpret what scientists are telling them.

Covid-19 will be beaten by vaccines. Therefore the important questions include:
  • vaccine supply
  • variant development, and in turn new vaccine development
To get a handle on variant development we need genomics in places in the world where the epidemic is out of control e.g., Brazil and we need computational biology to predict protein structure from amino acid residues which result directly from changes in the viral genome. What is the scope for mutation, what effects could result, and what level of replication could generate change over what timescale? There will be researchers looking at these questions, or similar questions. They will be the people who resolve this.

At the outset we were told Sars-Cov-2 is not like 'flu. It's stable. It wont evolve and render our vaccines useless. But now we find that it's somewhere midway between measles and flu, and hence we can't just see this is a black and white problem of vaccinating our way out of this. It's likely to be ongoing until such time as the global pandemic comes under control. And it isn't under control at the moment.

Completely agree regarding the mutations and the need for an evolution of vaccines, problems which will only get worse if we just focus on our own individual countries and ignore the wider situation.

But I would still argue that there’s a need for skilled politicians and some brave ones too. Diverting vaccines to other countries where the need is greatest will take real nerve and be a thankless task. If for example the government does divert some of the UK supply to the EU then I would a big backlash from the public, but it’s probably the right thing to do. And announcing further extensions to lockdowns and ongoing restrictions will get more difficult over time given how weary everyone is.

Basically, as I see it, it’s all about buying time to allow the science to work, but it will work in the end.

I worked with the EU for three years. It changed my mind. The idea that they would do a quid pro quo for anything connected to the uk post brexit is pie in the sky. We could divert every single dose
and they would not budge an inch on NI.
You have to understand that for so many of those at the centre of the EU, it is a religion. Normal diplomatic rules do not apply.

And just like that, millions of Brits have a dying or dead relative in *insert holiday destination here*

Boris was bright enough to use Cummings as long as he was useful.

He's been at the cooking sherry, my friend.
The amount of people who think the vote is a vote to extend the lockdown rather than a vote to extend the lockdown laws is off the scale. Granted, some are naively falling for it in good faith but it's also brought all the tin foil hat wearing fuckwits out of the woodwork again who are busy spreading their lies and misinformation. I'm going to take great delight in ramming their shitty conspiracies back down their throats in the summer when we're all back out on the piss again. Sure, foreign holidays will probably be off the agenda for now which makes sense for both the UK and our European friends until they get up to speed on vaccinations, but the UK will be back to relative normality and it'll be interesting to see what new shite the conspiracy theorists will come out with then.

Exactly right. Scary to hear the normally credible LBC ploughing this line yesterday and sending many folk into meltdown as they assume this means easing of Lockdown now cancelled.

they will quickly jump on something else, it's their tactic
