Regional Cases Today

Back to normal data.

Cases show up or down on yesterday and no minus numbers to worry about in the v number - which is today versus 7 days ago.

SOUTH

East down 40 to 176 v 161

London down 25 to 355 v 247 (London had the worst numbers in UK today second day running)

South East UP 21 to 257 v 215 (Also up and the third highest England total today)

South West down 7 to 119 v 61

All the Southern regions up a little week to week and now has two of the three most infected areas in the UK for the first time in weeks. Is this the new variant impact?

MIDLANDS

East down 43 to 184 v 221

West down 64 to 140 v 247

Good falls week to week today and in past week,

NORTH

North East down 9 to 81 v 68 Clocking up many two figure totals lately. Lowest in England again today.

Yorkshire down 61 to 307 v 456 - another good week to week fall and behind London by a bigger margin now.

And, NORTH WEST down 90 to 228 v 336 - only one lower score in past 7 months and well below London.

Greater Manchester Cases

Back to normal data.

136 cases today - down 20 on yesterday but that is versus a 90 NW fall. So the % split rose again.

This is the second lowest GM total in over 6 months and is down a big 70 versus last Saturday.

Manchester top scores on 39 which is up 8 on day but down 3 in week.

Bolton up 4 to 24 from yesterday and up 7 on last week. Still struggling a little.

Oldham down 12 to 16 on the day but still up 3 on last week.

Rochdale is next on 13 - down 4 in the day and 8 wk to wk - so a better day here.

Tameside has 11 - down 3 on the day and down 11 from last week. Doing well here now.

Salford up 1 on the day to 11 versus 19 last wk.

All the other 4 boroughs were in single figures today.

Stockport on 8 - up 3 on the day but down a healthy 18 week to week.

Bury one less on 7 - down 2 on the day and level with last week

Wigan had its best score in many months with just 4 which is down 7 on the day but 16 on the week.

And back in the ascendancy in top spot:-

Trafford fell by 7 to just 3 - down by 11 from last week.

Weekly cases:-

Bury 55, Tameside 69, Stockport 74, Trafford 76 , Salford 83, Rochdale 110, Wigan 122, Bolton 128, Oldham 148, Manchester 295.

More after the match but only GM weekly pop numbers to add as no weekend hospital data now as the pandemic has been downgraded by the NHS to not require them.

GM Weekly Pop Data after today:~

Borough / Pop Today / 7 days ago / up or down wk to wk/ Testing is % of local population who have tested positive for Covid over past year.

As ever with Pop going up is bad, going down good - the higher the number the better or worse depending on direction moving. The Pop is total cases in past week versus 100,000 POPulation to even out the comparison versus size and expected cases based on numbers living there.

Oldham 62 / 43 UP 19 Testing positive 9.7%

Manchester 54 / 34/ UP 20 Testing positive 9.5%

Rochdale 50 / 43 / UP 7 Testing positive 9.5%

Bolton 44 / 43 / UP 1 Testing positive 9.0%

Wigan 37 / 32 / UP 5 Testing positive 8.8%

Trafford 32 / 20 / UP 12 Testing positive 6.9%

Salford 32 / 25 / UP 7 Testing positive 8.9%

Tameside 31 / 26 UP 6 Testing positive 8.0%

Bury 29 / 22 / UP 7 Testing positive 9.0%

Stockport 25 / 26 / DOWN 1 Testing positive 7.1%

Good day for Stockport - regains top spot and only borough now with a falling Pop Score. Just.

Perhaps good news for Oxford/AZ. 10 care home residents who've had one dose infected with SA variant. Pre vax expect 3 or possibly 4 deaths. 0 so far, infections mainly asymptomatic. Small numbers, but positive nonetheless.

Why concern? All vaccinated, no deaths. Successful vaccination works pretty well against a new variant.

First jab booked tomorrow morning at Whalley Range CC.
Anyone else who has had the jab (following either long covid or a nasty bout of covid) feel better after it or experienced any side effects?

I was thinking of calling the docs soon as I’m worried my lungs are fucked up (cough a lot & im still breathless doing anything more than walking.
Ex thinks I’m making it up (despite me being a runner who ran several times a week, not running in over 3 months) which was sweet of her.

I had the flu vaccine a few years ago but ended up low level ill for a few months.
Not sure if that’s classes as a reaction ...

Watching the news about how there is a slow down in uptake on USA and Africa with the worry about the mutations that could happen because of it, so at what point will it become mandatory to have it. If we have these so called COVID deniers spreading variants around the world at some point a decision will have to be made, you either have it or you are severely restricted at what you can do if you don’t.

Maybe a few years down the line but they will never be able to force people to become part of a medical trial

This was always hoped for and looks like very good news given the apparent lack of efficacy in preventing infection in younger people shown in clinical trials.

If proved representative, then remaining concerns are that *if* infection and transmission of the variant is unaffected by vaccinating:

1. There will be a huge and rapid wave through the country as we open up, leading to large numbers of deaths and serious disease in the unvaccinated and the proportion for whom vaccination doesn't help.

2. That surge will give an opportunity for further mutations, with the potential for a worse variant still.

So good news, but still reasons to be cautious and track it carefully.

Making it up haha, fuck me. Which vaccine are you having?

I had the AZ and was very poorly around 10 hours after the jab, the effects lasted about 40 hours. I've not knowingly had Covid, but apparently the side effects I had show that it is likely I have and were just the antibodies doing their job.

Are you so stupid that you think vaccine refusers are responsible for new variant spreads?

reassuring and great news

No evidence Indian variant can 'get around' coronavirus jab

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Eustice said there is no evidence the Indian variant of coronavirus is able to "get around" the vaccine.

Was it the study in SA on about 2000 people (with az) a couple months ago that showed minimal efficacy for mild/moderate illness with the SA variant? Has there been an update to the evidence as I know that was a little while back

have they tested the vaccines and found that it neutralises the Indian variant, if so great. If they are just saying they have an absence of evidence, which they often do, then that is not convincing

Let's hope so, as numbers of it in the UK have now doubled from 77 to 160 (confirmed cases) since last report a few days ago.

Just had the AZ at Whalley Range.
No side effects as yet (aside from a rather uncouth erection).

Seriously hoping it eliminates my long covid...convinced Prince Philip could exert more than myself at the moment.

Mate had his AZ yesterday. Sank 9 pints and was out playing rugby this morning.
Whether the fact I had it makes me more likely to have stronger side effects (or second jab is likely too instead) I don’t know.

Brilliantly run operation, didn’t feel a thing and even managed to drop a Blind Date joke in.
Tad emotional for a brief second too...
