Been watching City for 40+ years. If this goes through I'm definitely renewing my season ticket. This is exciting. Lots of new and exciting things to look forward to:

1. What tune/fanfare will we come onto? I'm going for the theme tune to Harold Lloyd played on kazoos.
2. Will we boo it?
3. Will Sterling start in the same 11 as Mendy in the competition?
4. Is it true the trophy has already been made and is equivalent to the Stanley Cup in size?
5. Will the pundits include Keane, Ferdinand, Owen and Neville?

Oohhh...... Can't fucking wait.

Not sure if City are the only ones, but I would like to see something from the management explaining their decision to the supporters.

The decision to go with the ESL might well have been one taken reluctently but without a confirmation I am sure that many will feel so let down.

Since the takeover I have felt that the owner was investing into the club and appreciating the bond we have with the club.

Unless there is legal reason for not communicating with us, I feel they score an even bigger own goal and risk undoing all the goodwill previously created.

I cannot however in any shape or form condone getting into bed with clubs like the rags, dippers and their fucking shameless owners.

Listen we've known each other a while and I respect the head on your shoulders. But I'm left today watching your reaction video and reading your posts and the overwhelming thought is "what did you THINK would happen?".

The European Super League was always going to come up, it's too profitable an idea for it to not keep coming around.

Did you think these investors at City from the other side of the planet who were happy to post the biggest financial losses in the history of the sport were going to purposely hurt their growth by dying on a moral hill of competitiveness? These people who purposely distorted "competition" by their huge investments? There's just not a reality where I could have seen that happening in 2011 let alone 2021.

We've spoken for years about City's desire to be one of the big boys in European football. We've all known that that is what we wanted. That's what we've gotten now. We're locked in for a quarter of a century as one of the giants of the game.

City were never the "cartel busting" force that some on here presented them as. City were out to make money for City and grow the club to be the biggest in the world. That was always their goal from the day the takeover happened. Shit, they literally told us that in the Shiekh's first statement if I remember correctly.

Buried in this thread I've argued that competition doesn't exist in the European football and hasn't done for the last 30 years. But I'm consistently surprised that people who support a club who know better than anyone else that you NEED a billionaire investor just to compete can really talk like there's real competition already and this is a death knell for it. Competition died a decade before City were taken over. City's actions over the past 12 years prove that competition is dead because look at what we had to do in order to compete.

And watching Sky Sports come out against this as a money grab is almost making me vomit. Remember free to air top division football? Sky Sports invented much of the economics of football that led to the death of competition. Now that digital distribution is going to be the major player rather than satellite, and they are not positioned like Amazon are to deliver that content digitally, they've suddenly found some morals about the whole affair.

It never ceases to amaze me how corporations suddenly find morals when it is in their financial advantage to do so.

Agree fully with all of that. Even so though, the illusion of competition was still there and was broken through from time to time, albeit more and more sporadically.

Personally it’s the potential knock on impact to domestic competition that makes this step unpalatable. If they make the rewards so high as part of the European competition and also make that a guaranteed entry, I don’t see how the integrity of the domestic league can be preserved.

No doubt the European Super League would happen one day but why make it a closed competition? Thats the issue here.

A open competition for all, I could support, but closed to the same teams, year in, year our, you got to be having a laugh.
No mate the debate is the timing they are fukin shit houses when we can't voice our opinion

It was definitely competitive.

Despite all the money, power and influence they have; since City were taken over:
United have spent 4 years outside the Top4
Liverpool have spent 7 years outside the Top4
Arsenal have spent 5 years outside the Top4
Chelsea have spent 4 years outside the Top4

...after they’d all spent 6 out of 8 years as the Top4 together before City were taken over.

This year three of that Sky4 could finish outside the Top4!

Since City were taken over there have been 5 different winners of the Prem, compared to 4 in the 18 years previous to our takeover.

TV rights money has seen the average quality of the league rocket. Bottom half Prem teams buying players from CL clubs.

The Prem is...was...in a very healthy state and heading in an even better direction.

Now we’ve fucked that! We are fucking over meritocracy for teams who deserve to be rewarded for being run well and finishing high up the highest quality league in world football. This season could have been the making of West Ham. Now what are they going to face in their future?
Magnificent post. If you're ok I'm stealing a lot of that.

Dead in its current money making format, but not dead overall.

Everton, West Ham, Newcastle, Leciester, Leeds, Southampton, Villa, Wolves all big clubs with 30k+ fanbases.

Then add the two Sheffield clubs, Nottingham Forest, Watford, Mboro, Burnley, Palace, Brighton, West Brom, Stoke, Blackburn, Derby, Sunderland, Portsmouth all with 20k+ attendances. It would actually be a great competitive league.
It would be competitive but the TV companies are not going to pay big money for that.
Look at the Championship now.
The bottom team in the PL gets approx £100m now, they would never get anywhere near that if the "big 6" left.

This is a shit show and the ramifications will change the football landscape forever

I think Pep is a man of the people, he truly believes that football is all about the fans and I don't think he'd be afraid to say what he thinks

I'm sure he will be totally up to speed with all this so his press conference tomorrow will be very very interesting

If he doesn't criticize the plans, what does that say? I'm hoping it would suggest that there's details we don't know about which would make things seem a bit better if we did know

If he does come out and slams the plans, effectively also slamming his employer, where does that leave him? In an untenable position?

This is going to collapse. An error of judgment I feel. UEFA will ban City from this seasons Champions League. Indeed if I were them I'd cancel all revenue we've earned to date.

If I were City I would move very quickly to exit from this. We've probably got 48 hours to get out.

The words bayern and integrity don't go together
If it goes ahead they will join in my view. It’s a longer game for them. The 50+1 ownership hurdle means that they need to consult and convince rather than steamroll the change. Look at their senior management. Most follow the money or in some cases gifts. Their very ego means that they believe their club should be at the top table in the prime competitions.

If the ESL replaces the CL and is closed to all but 5 invitations, where do the clubs go that would have qualified for the CL? Say Leicester continue to finish 5 places higher than Arsenal (who are always in it) in the PL surely the ESL will be a lower standard than the CL is now?

Thats why the CL is a competition and the ESL is a show with zero merit.
