Its all about the insidious Americans. It started with Murdoch and the Sky deal (and it will ultimately end with him deciding the future of football based on what Sky do). Then came the Russians, Thais and Middle East sovereign states, who bloated the fatted calf. But the current game changer are the Americans: Glazers, Kroenke, FSG and our own Silver Lake. At least the oligarchs and Sheiks have always pretended to care about the game - not true at all of the Americans - they only see soccer as a cash machine - after loading their clubs up with debt, they were always playing a long game - and this is it - a NFL 'light'. I can promise you if this happens, in the next decade - a 'franchise' like City will move to London, or the South of France. They simply don't care. Its never been about the fans - its about the pay-per-view subscriber, and this season, with fake crowd noise and empty stadiums has taught them the show can go on. The great tragedy here, is that the there are no 'good guys' - FIFA, UEFA and FA are either cabals of corruption or utterly hopeless. For me, if this happens - which is allegedly very likely - its the end of football for me. It is not about being a nostalgic dinosaur, or standing in the way of change. Its about the essence of what football is. Which is about live, real and emotional engagement - its about being in the moment - and it makes no difference, as a City fan, if its Dickov's goal in extra time at Wembley in the second division playoff final or Sergio's winner to clinch the title a decade ago. Same emotion - same commitment - same passion. From 'tunnel clubs', to VAR, to the fact that over the past year, if you wanted to follow your club, you were forced to pay for Sky, BTSport, Amazon Prime - we are now more than ever, football 'consumers', not football fans. Another step into the 'NFLism' of football. RIP Football.
Fantastic post. I wish it was wrong, but, unfortunately, I believe everything you have written here is spot on. It's f**k*ng tragic! Football with no passion, no feeling of belonging, no tribalism, no hugging a stranger, no banter with rival fans at the games (banter as we know it at least), no pride, no emotion. Football with no soul.

Seriously are people genuinely this blind? They're passionate for Sky. If they were passionate they'd have slagged off the CL bollocks about history teams. FFS.
They have done and Carragher even questioned what sky did in the 90’s a few minutes ago.

The BBC News headline is that ministers are to do anything to block new league. No specifics but bashing greedy football clubs are easy PR wins for politicians. I don't think this will happen.

If City signed up at the very last moment then it suggests we have misgivings so exit it.
That's like being just a bit pregnant...

Our investors in China, USA and Abu Dhabi have very certainly been checking all options to be part of a new competitive system in European football over the last years. It was on the cards since a while and you can bet strategical decisions will be very well prepared.
If we like that or not.

Who's to say our signature isn't already on a legally binding document filed with the ESL ? It could be a lot more difficult than just announcing we've had change of mind.
As romantic the notion is that we will just pull out to save English football this is the truth. We have sold our soul to the devil and now we must put up with the consequence. It’s too late

Would the club listen to fans opinion ?
If they saw 90% of us were against it would it make a difference?
Cant see it myself
Not a chance, doesn't even look like they've spoke to the management and staff about it. We're stuck to the bottom of their shoes mate, which they're currently scraping off. We're worthless to the owners, absolutely worthless

There is a lot of angst in this thread but most of it is based on two perceptions. Today it's the CL that will suffer but tomorrow it's the PL. And point 2, we are getting into bed with our enemies. We don't know what tomorrow holds but if the problem is tomorrow why react today if its only based on supposition? Point 2, we have worked hard in the past 13 years to get where we are, to reject a new European cup competition because we don't like our bedfellows would be childish and detrimental to the club's future.

And the big question is what happens if you fail these rules, what is to stop them creating a new set of FFP rules designed to make us fail?
Who regulates this, who gets to look at the books?

Can a team be expelled from the league even if they are a founding member and if so where do they then go to?
Into oblivio. Which is ultimately their end game as far as I’m concerned. I think we could be walking into a huge trap here

Fuck it, I'd rather stay in the prem and play Delap, Palmer, Doyle etc than have some superstars sign for the shitty superleague
And then Delap, Palmer, Doyle will go to play for super clubs, maybe even for the likes of rags and dippers, and your heart will be broken. Most players are loyal to money and global fame, not to fans, unless they are not good enough, that is.
