Possibly, but I'm not sure if it works like that psychologically. Kinda like how in the playoffs, the team who just scrapes in at the last game often does better than the team who narrowly misses out on automatic promotion.

Of course they do.
The winners get automatic qualification no matter where they end up in their own league.

They do now but didn't when the CL was set up in it's current format. It was changed when Liverpool won it (2005) but didn't qualify through the CL.
A cynic would suggest UEFA thought the CL was rigged to the degree that a team finishing outside their domestic top 3 or 4 couldn't possibly win the bloody thing.

We needed Liverpool to drop points in one of their last 2 games anyway so it didn't really matter who won that although this result means Liverpool could still be 5th going into the last game if they only beat Burnley by 1 goal so its arguably the best result. How good would it be if Roy hodgson was to kill liverpools hopes on the last day in his last game after the shit he got from that mob. Please!
