We should sell him, but not because I think he is shit or that he can't go back to a good level. We should sell him because for 300k/week we can do better. It's as simple as that.

This Foden is already a better player than any of Sterling's version(only his 18/19 form has similar level). And compared to this Mahrez only his 18/19 is clearly superior and his 17/18 is similar. So if he gets back to his 17/18 level, he would be competing with Mahrez for a spot and it would depend on he opposition which player is the best option. For 300k/week that's just not sufficient. We need a star, not a great role player.

Also, a player with 10 G, 10 A can have a better season than a player with 40 G, 15 A. Football is much more than just your end product. Every manager would take Zidane, Xavi or Iniesta over Lampard, who has more than twice the goals than all of them.

For Sterling, he pretty much can only have a great match if he scores or assists. Why? Because his strenghts(movement and pace) are only helpful if his end product matters. He's not gonna give you great and impossible passes, he's not gonna dribble 3,4 players and break the defense; he's not gonna give you brilliant link-up play(Mahrez, KDB, Foden for the first goal today for example); he's not gonna give you great shooting out of the box.

Just ask yourselves, can Sterling be the best player on the pitch, consistently, without scoring goas or assists? No, but KDB can, Foden can, Mahrez can, Bernardo can, Gundogan can. That's why goals and assists are not as important for them as they are for Sterling.

could cause some problems for chelsea coming on as a sub late in the game next week.

then its time we move him on...

One of his better performances of the season but its sadly a low bar. He did at least actually look up instead of his usual head down and shuffle until he loses it a few times in the second half but its just so obvious he's not upto scratch. Every other player keeps it with ease and look effortless, sterling looks so unbelievably awkward and rarely looks in control. Things break down with him far too often, you wouldn't mind that if he's dribbling into the box 1v1 but not when he's struggling to control a 15 yard ball.

His movement (when he doesn't want to play playmaker) is phenomenal and a fantastic asset to the sidenbut it's ultinatelynuseless if he can't finish, assist or create from it. Anything north of £80 million I'd be taking this summer even if it's a rival. If there's no bids, we give him a new contract and wait until next summer, and hope to attract a similar bid after a hopefully less financially unstable season

No matter what the occasion, this thread will be active with negativity. Won’t surprise me if he’s getting slated on Saturday if we win the Champions league
His thread gets activity even when he isn't playing.

The most popular thing people bash Sterling with is how good Foden is... a generational player who is likely to be a Balon D'or contender in years to come, on the level of Haaland and Mbappe.

Sterling’s going to compared against them though and rightly so - he’s one of our top earners and allegedly close to signing a new contract that will no doubt keep him there, if not raise his position.

A £300k p/w player needs to be one of the very best, otherwise it’s an absolutely dreadful waste of resources. And therein lies the uncomfortable nature of this extension given the season Sterling’s had - especially when he’s dropped down the pecking order.

I don’t enjoy lumping in on him, but we shouldn’t have to have the ‘he just needs to build some confidence’ conversation after every match he fails to live up to expectations.

He has a high benchmark simply because he’s one of the top earners in this side. He’s earned that in the past, no denying that, but people are going to understandably be worried when his performances aren’t up to par for a significant period of time and he’s on the cusp of signing a massive contract extension.

I'm not getting into this contract discussion that people love to get into until we see what actually happens.

You projected alot more than what I said. Everyone knows this is a down season for him, nobody is saying anything unique about that.

But there is clear bias against him.

Plays well, does good actions --> Criticized because he should be expected to do them

Takes a shot that a keeper saves --> Criticized heavily, even when in this game many of our players had shots saved or skied

Doesn't even play --> People come on to criticize because of how good Foden is playing, and instead of propping Foden up for the generational talent he is, the chance is taken to put Sterling down

There is a clear pattern here.

There really is no point in him playing at the moment. Any team in the league would be frustrated with him. So many levels below everyone else. Nothing he does is with confidence and you are just waiting for him to mess up a move or finishing one.

Finishing really poor but his overall game was very good.
His best for a while. He will never get a fair hearing from some sections of our fan base which is pretty sad considering his trophy haul since signing.
Agreed. I was impressed with his link up play and decision making 2nd half.

About min 60 he made that smart cutting pass to Kev and an exploding run into the box, that was superb. Didn't have his former confidence for a good end product but he shows some signs of improvement.
Fingers crossed.

Very good today but when he is gets passed his man cross it early and towards the pen area occasionally mix it up Sterling..
