Not really. There’s a deadly virus out there that is feared by some, disregarded by others and the rest fall in the middle, where you need to have some common sense to help prevent it ripping through the populace whilst vaccines are administered.

We‘re at the point where we are nearly there. We hoped it would be June, it’s now likely to be July With an outside chance of it being a bit later than that.

The furlough scheme is in place until it ends.

Surely it’s prudent to get our vaccination % high enough to negate the risk brought forward from this delta wave?
We already have done.
Sounds like you think we will be there on august 21st

We haven’t percentage wise with the more transmissible delta virus.

If delta hadn’t happened, we’d have already opened up.
You’re ignoring the super echo variant that is on the way. It requires everyone to be given a top up vaccination.

in seriousness: the way you express your less than authoritative opinion on what percentage of the country need to be vaccinated to remove remaining restrictions is bizarrely confident in its truthfulness. Interested to know precisely what the % figure is and how you reached it.

Must admit I know tonnes either with it or isolating and it is clearly rising fast. No one seems that Ill who I know but I can see it being huge by the end of July.
I'm the same - I know plenty who have it and everyone I know with kids has bubbles closed in schools. Two lads at work had it in January and both still can't smell still. It doesn't cause them problems, apart from making brews with off milk, but it's a reminder that it's not a cold, or flu either.

My worry is that if we're not careful, by the end of July/August and then going into September (schools go back) the case numbers will be very, very high - probably higher than they were in January. And we then head into autumn/winter with high case numbers.

This isn't what I was expecting as we open up.

Marvin will be able to give the definitive answer, but the r number of the delta variant suggested around 80% double jabs IIRC.

I’m not ignoring any variant. The delta one is the current issue.

Your “super echo“ variant currently doesn’t exist, so we can’t discuss it. Should it arise and it have a higher R number, then it would need to be looked at as a danger. If it has a lesser R number without a high fatality rate, it could be ignored.

Marvin most certainly won’t have a definitive answer. It cannot be known. Scientists analyse data. They don’t accurately predict the future, how could they? Just ask professor pants down.

They do and I leave them to do it. They are much better at it than you or I.

Foreign travel is not just controlled by our government. Other countries might look at our cases and think, you know what, we’ll wait for the Brits to come over until they’ve got their latest wave under control. The whole world needs vaccinating to a high % before everything begins to return to normal.

You don’t need to sit at a table when you‘re out. Stand up if you need to.

Masks won’t be mandatory for much longer. I’ll still wear one as a courtesy to others, but recognise that my view isn’t universal.

Sitting at a table, wearing a mask occasionally and worrying about foreign travel whilst the world vaccinates itself aren’t huge impingements on personal freedom. I suggest it’s the feeling of not being able to be free to do these things that it’s you more than the inconvenience they cause.
If other countries decide whether to let us in or not, that’s their prerogative but let’s not forget that Spain binned off the need for a negative PCR test on entry a few weeks back, yet our government insisted that you still have to isolate for 10 days upon return and also have to take 3 Covid tests - one before returning home and two when you get back. The prices of those latter two aren’t cheap either. In short, that testing malarkey is nothing short of an expensive scam as many blues will testify. Also, why was Portugal put back on the amber list so soon after going green?
The fact is, our government are making it way too restrictive and way too expensive for people to travel abroad and it needs to fucking change.

As I said, I don't want any more restrictions. I honestly want them gone, just like most people. It's been a long hard few months, no question. I guess I'm saying I just don't understand why now.

I think my concern is that it feels like we're opening up on the 19th because the govt said they would a few months ago. If I'm honest, it feels like they are just wanting to move on and there's every chance this is absolutely not going to go away. It feels like they are wishing it away. My worry is that by wishing it away, it doesn't go away for a lot longer.

If the current restrictions are allowing for rapid rising of new cases, removing them is only going to speed that up. For example, if wearing masks reduces transmission - I assume it does as that's why we've worn them - then making them "personal responsibility" is going to increase transmission. Removing social distancing will increase transmission. More people on public transport and in the office increases transmission. It's the absolute opposite of what we want to happen.

Honestly, when they announced the roadmap I expected 90% of people to be vaccinated and about 1000 new cases a day. I didn't think we'd be about 75% vaccinated and potentially 40k and rising cases a day.

I don't know what to suggest really, but I just feel we're removing the restrictions for the wrong reasons. And if we lockdown again, I won't be at all happy about it.

Considering a lot of the people catching it are double vaccinated, I don’t think you will ever see below 1,000 cases a day again. At some point we need to stop reporting on cases like they are planning in Singapore and monitor hospitals and deaths. People are seeing the high case numbers and panicking, when in reality if we had the same number of deaths and hospitalisations at the start of the pandemic we are having now, there would have never even been a consideration for any sort of restrictions.

They are still suggesting tests before returning after the new don't need to quarantine rules.
Again a bit baffling, the vaccines should be the liberators?
To me the overseas travel issue is connected to the green emissions reductions we are seeking with this lot hiding behind the pandemic.

Our Government shafted the Portugueses, who were the white knights to allow the Champs League final to go ahead with fans. They were a month too late closing down flights from India because they prioritised a trade deal. Without that month of Covid flights, we wouldn’t even need to discuss whether to keep some restrictions or not.

I think the testing (re flights) is needed for a while yet but the costs need to be reduced.

Why was it our government? They did exactly what you wanted them to do with regards to India by refusing UEFA delegates. Portugal government saw the pound signs and went for it, nothing to do with our hover no matter how much you may not like them.

Put your Tory Y fronts to one side for a few seconds mate. The Portugueses held the Champs League final and within days we turned off the tap to their essential travel industry, with little evidence. Compare that to how flights continued from India for a month, a country swamped with a much more transmissible Covid strain.

Yes it was the right call to keep out the UEFA free loaders if they wouldn’t accept our regime. That’s not the same as shifting the goal posts and shafting a friendly country.

Im defo not a Tory pal never voted them in my life! Just not so blinkered by my political leanings that my bias clouds my judgment so much.

Daughter’s isolating again after one of her class mates tested positive, second time in as many months. Seems pretty rife in schools at the moment. Feel for her as she’s only got a few weeks left at primary school, so prom/leaver’s assembly etc. all in jeopardy. I know it’s not that important in the scheme of things, but it’s hard for this generation of kids who are missing out on their childhoods.

Surprised the anti mask brigade aren’t pushing for the wearing of seat belts and the ban on smoking indoors to be scrapped.
The lockdown brigade would say “no one is suggesting that”.

seriously describing those who want to end restrictions as “anti mask brigade” is just aggressive language along the lines of calling someone “anti-vax” if they argue against giving it to those who don’t need it.
