I suspect that has a lot to do with the US attitudes to vaccination/covid in different areas - and Fauci makes the point that a lot of this is down to people choosing not to get vaccinated/follow rules.

In the UK, where (I believe) there's less variation in vaccination rates and rule following, it's nowhere near 99%.

I don't have reddit so apologies if I'm wrong on this but I also don't think Delta has taken off in numbers to affect their death figures at this stage so what's one thing over there will be different to the situation here.

Full GM details:

Total cases 1678 - DOWN 48 on Yesterday - from NW FALL of 44

Obviously good as it is more down than the entire region.

Wk to wk DOWN 263 when the NW Fell by 223 So GM is doing much better here again by dropping by more than the entire regional fall.

BOROUGH / CASES TODAY / V YESTERDAY / V LAST WEEK

BOLTON 114 / DOWN 3 /DOWN 7

BURY 95 / DOWN 1/ DOWN 28

MANCHESTER 312 / DOWN 82 / DOWN 139

OLDHAM 186 / DOWN 4 / UP 6

ROCHDALE 146 / DOWN 7 / UP 4

SALFORD 152 / DOWN 21 /DOWN 66

STOCKPORT 128 / DOWN 23 / DOWN 14

TAMESIDE 144 / UP 35 / UP 4

TRAFFORD 172 / UP 45 / UP 14

WIGAN 229 / UP 13 /DOWN 37

Bury doing the best now in GM no question. But Bolton and Stockport both edged down day to day and week to week today,

Stockport extended by a huge amount their lead over Trafford as best overall Pop Score as Trafford had another pretty awful day, Some of its highest numbers ever this week and its Pop Score is taking a battering because of them.

Manchester had a very good day down week to week a lot. Better news for GM Pop Scores today,

Laughable that Bury is the lowest, everyone round here has got covid, it just can’t be right.

I suspect that is the case, but they don't want to say it aloud.
After watching the press conference it seems obvious. They avoided the word "herd immunity" at all times. I think one of the hacks used the phrase, "community immunity." But the plan behind closed doors must be to keep vaccinating as quickly as possible while allowing young people to get infected because they will not get ill (except in very rare cases) but will develop immunity. I wonder what percentage of the population they need to get to with infections and vaccinations. They must have a good idea of this but can't risk saying it out loud. They are taking a gamble but it's hard to see what other choice they could make at this stage.

Long term we need an air filtration system in buildings and transport that can filter and sterilise the air. A lot of people will have developed phobias about social contact. Whatever the rights and wrongs of it, it will lead to changes in public behaviour that could impact on cities, transport, shopping, building regs etc
Or we could open the windows…..

Greater Manchester

Weekly total cases:-

Bury 744, Bolton 867 , Tameside 944, Stockport 1027 , Trafford 1095 , Rochdale 1101 , Salford 1274, Oldham 1343, Wigan 1699, Manchester 2862

Much better day here with most falling and Bury pulling well clear now.

But lowest weekly total is only part of the story. Over 700 is far more than Bury should be getting as its size suggests it ought to always have the fewest cases. This is where Pop scores come in as they even out expectations via population numbers to a visible marker of real comparative performance.

Stockport had a better day too but not enough to go below 1000 cases.

But Manchester's fall was huge and took it well below 3000 happily.

You could almost whisper that the timings are working to plan perfectly, with schools all finishing in the next couple of weeks, get as many kids as possible infected knowing they get an automatic breaker whilst we kick on with vaccinating.

MORE ON ENGLAND HOSPITAL DEATHS:-

SATURDAY 20 with 7 NW - week before 18 with 10 - week before 9 with 7

SUNDAY 3 with 1 NW - week before 1 with 0 - week before 2 with 2

MONDAY 1 with 0 NW - week before 2 with 2 - week before 0 with 0

The 24 deaths by Regions: - NW 8, Midlands 4, NE & Yorkshire 4, London 3, South West 3, East 1, South East 1

In the NW the 8 deaths were East Lancashire (Blackburn) 3, Manchester 2, Pennine Acute (Oldham etc) 2 and Blackpool 1

Ages of the 24 were:

1 each in 0 - 19, 20 - 39 and 40 - 59

10 aged 60 - 79 and 11 aged 80 PLUS

One of the deaths was fron over 3 months ago.

Nearly all the others the past week

Jul 4 and 3 are still on 0

Jul 2 is on 7 after 3 days

Jul 1 is on 10 after 4 days

And June 30 is on 19 after 5 days.

This is the highest 5 day total since 25 on April 12

And the week to week comparison of the first 4 days of last wk (36) is v (48) for the first 4 days of this week,

Skewed heavily by that 19 and only coming days will tell if 30 June is an outlier and just a bad day or the coming norm in next few days.
I think there will be quite a big number tomorrow.

It would only take one child out of hundreds of thousands to die of Covid (with no other underlying causes) to throw a spanner in the works. I am not the Government's biggest fan but I really do think this is a tough decision to take and I can't argue with the logic of what they have announced today. It really is a can't win situation.
The other risk of course is of a new deadly variant because the more infections which occur the greater the risk of mutations (anywhere in the world). Let's hope this decision comes off.
