Progressive Rock

Ooh, but of prog royalty gossip in that last line there! I’m a big fan of Fish, both solo and in the band beforehand, but never knew that. I’m guessing that happened at some point after Kayleigh and before his current partner!
They had collaborated on an Ayreon album (The Human Equation I think). Had a whirlwind romance and she got cold feet on the wedding day... Big age difference but I think Fish was quite erratic at this point in his life.

In the mid 1990s Prog had a revival. Key albums from that period that drove the scene were:
King Crimson: Thrak
Yes : Talk
Yes: Keystudio (keys to assencion)
Spock's Beard: The Light
Marillion: Brave /this strange engine
Porcupine Tree : sky moves sideways/ Signify
Flower Kings: Stardust We Are
Dream Theatre: Scenes From A Memory
Transatlantic: SMPTE
Ayreon : Universal Migrator

On a more UK basis, Cyclops Records (founded 1994) were releasing some great 'unknown' bands through the same period:

Jump
Flamborough Head
Mostly Autumn
Vulgar Unicorn
Saens
Parallel or 90 Degrees
Echolyn
Pineapple Theif

All these worth checking out.

The role of Porcupine tree cannot be under estimated. Come 2000 their influence drives a whole new wave of bands from Europe.

Pain of Salvation
Riverside
Opeth
Sylvan
Anathema
RPWL

In addition Yes had a mini revival with their last two good albums The Ladder and Magnification.

Unbelievable Jeff.
Outstanding !! I take it they were rehearsals. Do you know where this is from ?
It was the centrepiece of the LP and the longest track & not a single so I can’t quite believe it was film for that reason. My Yes lore is a bit rusty but I think they recorded in Montreux maybe.
I can’t believe that is the only footage from the sessions but I’ve never been able to discover anything else. A tv documentary at the time perhaps?

I’ll do a bit of research on this Mr Bells. Something tells me it’s from a DVD and my haunch tells me it was London.
As always I’m probably wrong :-)

There are some prolific artists in the world of Prog who release a lot of content over recent years in various guises. These include:.

Steven Wilson
Mike Portnoy
Devin Townsend
Neal Morse
Arjen Luccansen(?) (Ayreon/Star One/Ambion/Solo)

I was prompted to listen to Tormato just now. I like it better than most.
The only two negatives for me are Circus of Heaven and Rick’s Casio keyboards.
Howe is on fire and the tone on Squires bass is just incredible.

Agreed. I really like Don’t Kill The Whale too. This version has great ending/ intro to the next track too :-)

A lovely memory from the release of Tormato.
I was in the car with my Dad one Saturday afternoon and I think they used to do an album review on Radio 1 that time.
I was 15 years old at the time. Imagine my excitement when they announce it’s Tormato by Yes and play Future Times , Don’t Kill the Whale and Arriving UFO on Radio One whilst discussing the album.

Brilliant stuff pal - and it was a real treat back then too - Saturday afternoons Radio 1 took over the VHF stereo from old doddery Radio 2!

For the ones that don’t know Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson yet. This song for me typifies progressive rock. SWs influence has long been unaware. Not anymore.

Am I wrong to think there is a difference between symphonic and progressive rock?

YES, imho a typical symphonic rock band (my favourite album Tales From Topographic Oceans), turned progressive with the albums 90125 and Generator - both fantastic as well).

I think you've got the wrong idea mate.
