Loads of new F1 fans got a race they probably adored. But the regulars are left stunned by the abysmal decision making.

Lewis had it won. Max and Red Bull were resigned to the fact it was done except for a miracle. But a miracle is certainly not rushing to force a final lap sprint between the two contenders with one on fresher tyres...

It is a clear manipulation of the circumstances to benefit one team. Whilst bias exists in all sports, that was quite ridiculous. That would be like our Aguero moment coming after the ref moved a couple of the QPR players out of the way and played until we scored. It's that hollow.

Has CAS ever had to make a decision on anything like this before in any sport?

I don't see how any new fans would adore that race. If it was my first race I would think fuck this shit you get a big lead twice and have to give it up because 2 other drivers went off the track. It makes no sense.

Any sane sport would have the restart with all cars the same distance apart. It has always suffered from being too complicated or plain daft.

Not sure what CAS would consider an outcome. Against the FIA would seem reasonable, but where does it leave RB?

Regardless, I can't see any CAS appeal coming up within 3 months, and so I think next season will start with Verstappen as champion.

I still think it was a mistake not to bring him in under the VSC. It was clear the Mercedes had the pace today.

I think that they assumed that the rules would be correctly applied. Fools eh?

If the ruling said "all" instead of "any", Mercedes would have an ironclad case to take to CAS, because that is how the FIA have wormed out of it. It technically doesn't state that every lapped car must pass the lead car before they can continue racing under a green flag.

Surely any legal argument would rest on precedence of use of this rule. Mercedes planned their strategy based on how this rule been applied before which is either ALL or NONE.

Ah I interpreted competing as competing for championships. And yeah it's an expensive sport to compete in so that's how it works.

You couldn't have a relegation and promotion system in F1. Imagine how complicated it would be when you get relegated to F2 and you have to fire 300 people!

Yeah it wouldn't work. Just with as much money in the sport as there is, all the powerful people in the background and an incompetent governing body. There's just bound to be corruption.

The RC can call in the SC on the last lap at their own descretion (there's a lot more into it that the FIA have used to justify it, though ut its too much to go into and doesn't change their defence), and Masi did. They wanted a finish under race conditions not yellow flags and worked their own rules to orchestrate it. Had Hamilton won would anyone be having this conversation about the safety car/gap reduction?

Because it says a message goes to all lapped cars initially so it contradicts itself and it’s clearly patently unfair on any lapped car behind Verstappen for a start.

I haven’t seen anywhere in the rules where the RC has discretion to override the specific rule.

On Hamilton, the time it would have taken to get all the lapped cars in front and then a subsequent lap before the safety car left would have had an impact on their decision whether to pit or not. They thought it was either the lapped cars would be between Hamilton and Verstappen or all would have passed, either of which would have led to a Hamilton win.

F1 occassionally gets decided through bullshit like this and the FIA is always at fault when it does. The world was watching them and they got their grandstand finish, that was all they cared about.

Yeah agree would meant Hamilton would of been second and then we would hope the race director would do the same but we won’t know that he might of just kept the safety car out till the end and max still would of win and why it’s dangerous precedent having one man dictate in a moment how he feels or how has leaned on him harder for him to think to change racing rules.

Mesi has used the terminology of 'any' to justify only sending 5 lapped cars through rather than the whole field.

Yep, I dislike F1 but thought I would give it a look today as it was a rare sporting occasion.
Who knows, maybe I might have been converted?
For the reasons you mention, I was left confused and pissed off that I had wasted my time on such a farce.
