I was talking about direct NATO funding. You are talking about defence budgets. Two separate things. Trump deliberately conflated the two to make it appear that the US were subsidising other countries. They weren't and still aren't. The 2% issue becomes a concern if a NATO country gets invaded and the countries who don't spend enough on their own defence can't send the required help to the country under attack. That hasn't happened yet and hopefully never will. Hopefully all countries will meet the 2% commitment soon which makes it less likely that they will ever need to send support to a country under attack because NATO will be perceived as stronger if everyone's armed forces are appropriately funded.

Surely anything he does or proposes has to be agreed with the EU and the US beforehand?

Due to Germany’s inaction it seems the US are taking this out of their hands.

The likes of Macron and Johnson trying to play the hard men and score points have fallen on death ears, they have no sword in this fight, only a scabbard.

Scholz also talked about Macron and him acting in unison with the same message being given to Putin. Scholz is due to visit Moscow after Macron. Also references the Normandy 4 round of talks with France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine.

I’ll give Scholz props for doing a CNN sit down in a foreign language.

Germany should never have ditched Nuclear after Fukushima. The French got it right.
