The Soviet era social structures have left marks all over Ukraine, the Central Asian countries, the Baltics, etc. Genuine issues and problems. He, though, is using it as the fulcrum to reconstitute the old ways. US and NATO have indicated clearly that they won't get involved with anything beyond the NATO boundaries. So, Putin will get his way, and WW III is averted for now. At least, the final will occur, with or without City. Hopefully, with De Bruyne and his magic.

There's always satisfaction in not often being wrong, and being right again.

Too late really - I'd have wanted UEFA to warn it could be moved if Russia did invade. Not that football matches are much in Putin's mind. Does he play chess?
 
I know it is a cheap shot and sport and politics should not mix but....

If one out our main sponsors was the Russian state airline would we have removed them from our list of sponsors by now? I guess a message from Downing Street is being waited on for this. A difficult decision.

Wembley is always a good bet for late notice changes. There seems to be nothing on there that weekend. Might be worth booking hotels with free cancellation?

NATO vs Russia. Do we have to pick one or the other? We are seeing the Balkanisation of Europe spreading further East and that was a Western-led process and a tragedy. This is very similar. Just don't take the Daily Mail to Guardian world view of liberal democracy as defenders of the free world. This marks the ongoing break-up of the Eastern bloc following the collapse of the Soviet Union and represents Russia trying to recover the Crimea which did not secede from the Russian Federation following Ukraine's secession. If only people could view the world independently from their own perspective but our view of the world is based on the BBC, Tory and Labour Party view as if that was an objective truth. They are not objective when it comes to football, and neither are they objective when it comes to politics.

My view of Russia is based on the fact that there is no opposition for Putin, he does not allow it.

At least in our country we can get rid of those in power if we want a change.

It is the Russian people that I feel sorry for nothing much has changed in that country since the rule of the Tsar's.
 
Couple of points raised in posts -
Firstly, the invasion and seizure of Crimea by Russia actually started in the Autumn of 2013, prior to the Sochi games in Feb 2014. Just as the current events in the Ukraine have been building up since last year. In both cases the "invasions" were well anticipated months before. In the case of the Sochi games the IOC could have acted beforehand.
Secondly, Gazprom is not just a sponsor of the CL, it is the anchor sponsor for several UEFA events, the the CL being the flagship. Gazprom is a very significant UEFA partner and source of funds. Gazprombank is a major bank to the Russian state. If St.Petersburg were to lose the 2022 CL final Putin is sure to take it as a very personal snub, an insult deserving of retribution to the UEFA.
It is significant that the Beijing Winter Olympics were held with all major sponsors in place, global brands such as Coca Cola, Samsung, Bridgestone, Intel, Panasonic, Visa, Toyota. This is despite Western governments not sending officials, boycotting, because of China's actions in Hong Kong and the Uighur region.

Think we should keep broader discussion of the situation in Ukraine to the main thread, and keep this specifically about the staging of the CL final (as unimportant as that seems at the moment).
 
If its rags v dippers take it to Dublin home game for both. If its Chelsea v Rags stage it in Glasgow old firm by proxy. If we're in the final Edinburgh would be perfect, finest City in the UK , great beer great people. Cardiff would be OK too.

It would have to be at a Rugby Stadium if in Edinburgh. Murrayfield has its advantages apart from the running track in front of the stand, but it’s not on UEFA’s list of approved stadia. A shame but it will not be in Edinburgh.
