Russian invasion of Ukraine

There's a bit of whataboutery in that question. It's pure speculation that he might ever want to go for e.g. Poland. And to anyone chiming in about his alleged "vision" for a rekindled grand USSR, assuming that is even true, then that may be an aspiration but it does not mean he is hell bent on it, nor that his views and actions might not be moderated by events.

Hard to imagine that the Ukraine situation is going remotely as he planned. And if taking Ukraine is met with this level of resistance and the enormous international reaction, the impact upon his economy, then you can times that by 10x if he went for Poland. He'd be mad to try this again.

If the hugely admirable resistance put up by the Ukrainians, and the significant arms we have provided, and the vast range of sanctions, are to have had any benefit, then IMO it is not that we will have prevented his successful taking of Ukraine. It is that he will think "Fuck, I am not doing THAT again".
The main point I was making is he stormed into Ukraine and annexed Crimea. The west did nothing. Now he's going for the rest of it.
We didn't bother when he installed a puppet government in Belarus. We didn't do anything about Chechnya. So when will do we do something ?

He's 69 years old so who's being primed to take over from him ? He seems quite fit for his age tbh but I'm sure he'll want someone of similar opinions and vision
Honestly I don't think anyone knows what he'll want. The old saying power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely etc. After however many years in power now, he is SO out of touch with reality and so far up his own arse, I don't really think anyone has a clue. He seems to more interested in Putin than in anything else.

Also, if overthrowing him is EVER a possibility, then surely there is an even greater possibility of disrupting the handover of Putin to Putin2. Inflexion points like that are opportunities for change.

We’re doing what we can, well our leaders are.

They’ve put very strong sanctions in place, are sending a lot of weapons to the Ukraine and are increasing military presence in NATO Eastern European countries.

Russia’s economy is dropping like a led weight in a river and he’s never had anything like that to deal with.

Whilst the West's response is impressive, we should now focus on letting the Russian people know our fight is with their knobhead president, not them, and that as quickly as sanctions have been imposed, they can be removed, if they remove him.

Good plan. Just one incy wincy question… how? when their news is whatever Putin wants it to be. A banner on a plane over Moscow perhaps? If only we knew folk who were a bit partial to this type of thing.

We are doing something. We are doing a heck of a lot actually, everything short of action which would run a very real risk of nuclear war. Seems to me that's about as far as anyone sensible would ever want to push it.

Playing devil's advocate. Why should we act as world police? There's conflicts going on all over the world where innocent people die, we don't get involved in those. Why do we need to get involved in this?

No doubt there has been some unacceptable discrimination but most of the report I’ve seen has been about international students not understanding that children and their mothers go first.

BBC was interviewing lines of Black Africans & Asians on the Polish/Ukraine border who just wanted to get out and were being refused. Only reporting what the United Nations are saying too, We can't be selective on everything and if folk are being discriminated it needs to be addressed.

No, it isn't complete bollocks at all. As any investor will tell you past results are not a reliable indicator of future performance. He's never experienced a fuck up like this before. He'd 69 years old FFS. And you think he's so stupid as to completely ignore events? You'd risk nuclear war over a future threat which may not even exist. That's complete bollocks.

He doesn’t have bad skin for 69. Do you think he’s had “work”?

Georgia applying to join the EU? Random considering I keep reading that they aren't helping volunteers send aid to the Ukraine.

He’s going for the east of it for sure. Jury is out on the rest of it but east is where most of the resources are - he can probably live with an improvised Ukraine being in the EU and draining EU resources. That way he gets what he wants and we all breath a sigh of relief that it’s over and Ukraine still exists.

Over 250'000 Murdered in Chechnya with every bomb available dropped on the poor bastards. Not an eyelid was batted, Amount of Deaths means nothing to Putin.

It is ever so slightly different.

He staged an illegal referendum in Crimea that made it 'OK' because the population had voted in favour of being invaded.
