It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

He's not coming to be second fiddle to Ederson he's going to compete for that number one position, saw a German pundit from the Bundesliga say that Ortega is a perfect pep player but is an unbelievable shot stopper. Which is good because it will make Ederson better

Had you heard of him before today? I never have.

Agree, at 29, he should think he can start games and challenge Ederson. But also possibly be more accepting of a 2nd choice place.

Makes me think the club will have had this one in mind, it doesn't just happen without some contact in the background. The way they signed Carson up, sold Bazunu, makes me think they looled at the no.2 goalkeeping position. Possibly offered it to Bazunu but at his age he really should be pushing to play.

I also doubt there would be approach there without having Some idea of who might be interested in Steffen and what he might want too.

I do watch bundesliga. Mostly Leverkusen , Dortmund and Monchengladbach games as they have really good young players. But there was a lot of German pundits and Bundesliga analysts saying he was incredible and one of the best in the Bundesliga last season. Im Surprised he’s joining us as quite a few high top of table Bundesliga clubs wanted him Leverkusen for one

Never heard of Ortega but after a few well-observed posts about his ability, I'll be fuming if he doesn't join.

Interesting one, mind, because we'll have been on it for a few weeks you'd think and can't see us going into the season with Ederson, Steffen, Ortega and Carson.

One will go - it won't be Carson given his recent extension/role in the squad and it won't be Ederson. That leaves Steffen, interesting to see where he goes. That FA Cup game against the dippers really might have been a nail in the coffin for him.

More like he wants out for play more minutes to compete for National sides spot than his performance in FA Cup.

Have you seen enough to give an honest appraisal of his passing?

I wouldn't expect it to be Ederson levels but I feel like you've got to be pretty damn composed and tidy to get more than a handful of games for us.
Tbh, I only had him in mind as a great stopper and didn't realize his footwork as Bielefeld was not in the focus as a team.

Just read an article (written by a German keeper coach named Stopper...) that Bielefelds coach Neuhaus intrduced possession style some years back and Ortega had to adapt by intense training.

Now he usually has more contacts (about 68 per match) than any other German keeper,
more than 50% accurate long passes (only topped by Neuer),
is used to keep possession under pressure and has quick decision making for ball distribution, also for long chip balls over the defence when Haaland says 'hi' ;)

Anyone who joined before 2010 should have their name in bold with a different colour. Just so forum users know who the bigger blues are and that those members opinions are far more important.

The font should get bigger with each year. Anyone under one year should have theirs in comic sans.

I've been on here since 2008 and still struggle to appreciate how it works ;)

I just think some people saw his authoritative style of posting, with so little time served, as condescending.

There are nuances of the English language that even many Americans struggle to twig, like irony and sarcasm?

He bit back perhaps because he felt he was being singled-out, but I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Some maybe didn't like a foreign fan with forthright opinions, others because they could see he would bite.

I mean, if we are talking abrasive, Gus was nothing in comparison to my bro Zin and @SWP's back ;)

I’m surprised Carson wasn’t kept on as keeper coach rather than part of the squad itself. He is 91 after all.

That'll be why Ortega supposedly turned down offers from other clubs to join us. Looked at Carson and realised, hold out a couple years then it's a job for life.

I think it is quite unfair to Gus, comparing the two. In impact on the forum and also in that Barca didn't leave for being 'hounded' he was banned, for winding folk up.
I liked both posters and both were unfairly picked on and hounded IMO. The fact Gus deleted his account whereas Barca retaliated to the insults was a pity for both posters, and the variety of insight on the forum in general. I hate bullying but it can be like that sometimes on here.

There is some sensitive souls who post on here I’ve never clicked ignore..

I admire your patience. I don't mind disagreement but I click ignore when I see someone post the same thing again and again (did it for a bit with Gus cos he got into such long arguments, even tho I liked when he talked about football), or when they post something so stupid that I'm like "this person just excluded themself from me caring for their opinion" e.g. "Raheem can fuck off", that kind of thing.

2006 for me as Brighton Blue, then samharris and now Yeahwhatever!! its been a ride..
Nowt will trump the 'somethings happening' thread in 2008 and the David Silva rag wind up thread(Think it was ono)

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t he top 3 keepers in the bundesliga last season. Saw a lot of German Bundesliga pundits rave about him on how good he is.
'kicker' has him ranked #6 for last season but I think esp. his outstanding distribution (plus short dinstance stopping) makes him so interesting for us and our game.

He actually sent me a PM to say thank you and was deleting his account.

Gus had a good insight about the wider game and working in the media.

I felt his written English was superb, but perhaps some things he got lost in translation, and there were some who seemed to enjoy getting the rise out of him.

I've taken breaks from this place in years gone by when this forum could get to you, and would hope he reconsiders at some point in the future.

We are all Blues, and at least he knew the difference between there and fucking their!!

Not enough of those posters about on here ;)
Very well said and 100% true, the guy was knowledgeable, intelligent and the most important of all, A BLUE.

Shame gus was bullied off by the usual bully boys, very knowledgeable about the game and players but because he didn’t go to Mary D’s or call people a rag or **** he was hounded off..

Gone but not forgotten …….

Is a shame mate. Never liked cliques, and you get them on here. Been one on the Raheem Sterling thread past few weeks, same posters blowing smoke up each other and repeated "likes" to each others comments.
