The Conservative Party

I think it’s the schools they attend and the company they keep.
Incidentally apparently mr. Pincher writes (or has written) a column for ‘the critic’ magazine on drink!
A job for which he seems to be well qualified.
Boozed up in a private members club on a Wednesday night and groping colleagues - it’s another world in Westminster……

It is interesting though when you look at the cause of by elections over time. I haven’t looked at it properly for a while but for some reason a scary percentage used to be caused by Labour MPs keeling over, while these days it’s usually triggered by some despicable behaviour, recently from a Tory.

Probably quite a good guide to the state of politics and standards in Westminster at the moment.
Four of the ten by-elections in this Parliament, so far, have resulted from impropriety (3 Conservative, 1 Labour). In the 2017-2019 Parliament, three of the five by-elections resulted from impropriety, and in the coalition parliament (2010-2015) some six of the twenty-one by-elections could be construed as having resulted from impropriety (half of them Labour MPs).

As you say, most by-elections result either from death or from people leaving for pastures new. I suppose the reason that there may appear to be greater cases of impropriety at the moment is that this Government has been mired in a culture of sleaze, yet very few cases lead to by-elections. In that respect, it’s rather similar to the Major administration from 1992-1997, when 16 of the 18 by-elections were from deaths, with Milligan’s auto-erotic asphyxiation the only one sleaze related. Yet, everyone remembers that as a sleaze-ridden Government.

They had cash for questions which was a big one for their reputation tho. And David Mellor getting his toes sucked.

Pincher suspended and will sit as an Independent. He currently enjoys a 19,634 majority in Tamworth over Labour, so if it were to become a by-election, it would be a big test for Starmer.

LD's will be salivating - another big Tory majority overturned? They have done it to bigger more Tory seats

Tamworth could put a blue rosette on a turd and they'd still vote it in.

It would be an interesting one as that would require Labour to stand aside. They came second in 2019 with the Liberal Democrats not even at the races, and I’m not sure that seat would have been earmarked as a potential LD seat. Labour standing aside would also serve as the most obvious exposure yet of the non-aggression pact.

The pact - declared or not - is the best way to defeat the Tories who are weighting the system in their favour - it would also pile pressure on fatso. So many Tories will be fearful of losing their seats ( on the gravy train ) as outside the HoC taking coke and sexually assaulting people actually has consequences and most wouldn't get a job paying what they are on now when you add in the exe's - plus their friends and families working for them will be out of work too

Nads must be raging that her side of the house is full of perverts that would rather cup bollocks than her.

Ah yes. Just looked it up

It's a Bellwether constituency. If there was going to be a by election there a Lib Dum win would give both major parties brown trousers.
The Liberal Democrats could conceivably win there if Labour and the Greens just fielded candidates but didn’t campaign, but the seat falls into that border area where Labour would hope to regain seats. Labour stepping aside would thus be embarrassing not only for Starmer personally but also for his supporters.
