He's a character that will always create debate and difference of opinion.
There's the positive side of him, in that his stats are impressive, and there's no doubt that his contribution to our success has been an important factor.
However, in my opinion, his best season was the 100 point title winning season, and I think there has been a slow decline since then, despite a late improvement.
His manner and personality also portray a guy who doesn't fully connect with the fans, and that's probably the main reason I find it easy to handle his departure and move on whilst being thankful for his services.

I think it will be a mistake if we don’t replace him.
We will replace him. Just not necessarily immediately. Depends on what players the club have their eye on and when they’re going to be available at a price we like. We don’t tend to just buy anyone for the sake of it. We only buy if they are the right player at the right price. And we’re happy to adapt in the short term if we have to, whilst waiting for the right signing.

Whether it works or not, it’s still exciting to think that Cole Palmer might actually get steadily increased minutes. And we still have Mahrez, we have Grealish with the classic Pep re-programming year out of the way, we have Foden, we have the Alvarez unknown. What we also have if Cucurella signs is the option to play Cancelo on the wing. We also have Bernardo who has played there loads for us. We can even play no wingers at all and go with wing backs and 3 central defenders if we really want to. We have options, we’ll be ok. And it will be fun.

I think he would have been good this season.

However, it would have been a gamble that he hit enough form that both him and us saw an extension on big money worthwhile.

Probably £60 million up on wages and transfer fee, which the club saw as too much of a risk.
