Nathan Ake

This is basically the only window where we could get 45m for a 4th choice CB who is expected to start maybe 15-20 games in a season. Probably an opportunity too good to turn down.

Whoever we sign as a replacement will probably be a downgrade. But let's hope the club makes up for that by strengthening at LB.
All true apart from the last paragraph.

Ake is very easy to upgrade, I simply don't get the fuss with him, and I ask again, why was he sat on the bench in the last month with injuries to Stones, Dias and Laporte?

The answer because he was not trusted by the manager and the manager has told him he can leave.

I pretty sure he was injured at the end of the month and that’s why he was benched.

Not overly bothered by him leaving. Top lad by all accounts but apart from the odd performance here and there has not really done anything to make you sit up. Shame for him that when the others were out injured he had a chance to really make a name for himself that he got injured.

Still think we should aim 60 million or so when selling him though. Chelsea have money to burn and we are in no rush to sell.

Getting a decent centre back to come in to be effectively 4th choice will be very difficult.

He was so injured that a couple of days after the end of season he was playing 90 mins for his country.

He was not picked to play by Pep, I wonder why?

And why do Chelsea have money to burn? With no CB's if cash was unlimited they would be shopping at a much higher level than Ake.

I don't think anyone is turning on him. More just seeing that being offered £50m for our 4th choice CB, who has started just 1/4 of our league games since signing is good business. Added to that, Chelsea want him and can probably offer more regular game-time so its highly likely that Ake wants to go. Its a good deal all-round.

Our 4th choice CB should be a youngster who can push for becoming a regular in years to come. If the likes of Mbete aren't able to fill in as 4th choice, then buy a youngster who can. Our 4th choice CB should not be a 27 year old International, who in 2 years hasn't shown anything to suggest he can become anything more than 4th choice, and who only plays when someone gets injured or needs a rest.

Surely the whole point of being 4th choice is that that they are there to play when someone is injured or needs a rest?

Exactly. Why would you have a 27 year old Dutch international doing it? The guy has started 19 games in 2 seasons (some at LB). The idea that our CBs are always injured and we need Ake is quite clearly not true. Besides, he is as “injury prone” if not more-so than any of the others.

4th choice should either be someone at the end of his career, happy to play the odd game and pick up a retirement fund, or a kid with huge potential to dislodge those above him in the pecking order.

We have someone who is supposed to be in his prime, but who isn’t really anywhere near the level of those above him, so is in some form stasis where his ability alone won’t propel him into the starting XI. Instead he is waiting on someone getting injured as the only chance he has of regular football in this side.

If he is still 4th choice after 2 seasons, he is not good enough and if £50m is on the table we would be mental to turn it down. Ake certainly won’t turn down the opportunity to go and test himself as 1st choice at a CL club and good luck to him.

Just want Chelsea to get a move on and sign Ake and Sterling, then we can finish our own business. I swear the announcement of players officially signing takes an age these days

Don’t think Chelsea have even agreed a fee with us for either yet. Guess no rush as Sterling and ake still on holiday

Ideally would like all our transfers in and out sorted before we go on our US pre season tour. However, we have until the the end of August until the window finishes so no rush.

We are 9 days into the formal transfer window, with 54 days left. 4 signings confirmed for a cost of circa 110m, 2 sold for over 100m, a handful of academy kids sold for circa 60m. Plus 1 player release and 1 contract extension. 2 more supposedly close to being sold for 100m+ and at least 1 incoming reportedly in the works.

Yeah fucking glacial mate.

From what I have heard Chelsea have quite a bit of money to spend but need a few players in. Two centre backs, possibly de jong and then Raheem and maybe raphina so looking at the best part of 200 million maybe more.

With regards to Ake and his injury I’m only going off what I believe to be true at the time that he was carrying an ankle knock and that’s why he didn’t play at the end of the season. I do think had he been fully fit then he would have started over Fernandinho.

I really like Ake but the guy couldn’t stay healthy here. When he played I was impressed, especially towards the last half of last season, but when we needed him most at the end of the season, he wasn’t fit and we struggled with Fernandinho.
He twisted his ankle but played when we really needed him , in pain

But if you judge him on the second half of this season he has proved valuable to the team. To arrogantly dismiss him as a poor 4th choice is unfair and indeed unwise.

Foden & Rodri's extensions supposedly ready to be announced as well and 11 of the U18s back to back league winners just signed their first professional contracts with 2 more at the end of this month when they turn 17, another 2 signed extensions.

It makes you wonder just what the backroom staff actually do with their time.

I think you are right to an extent. I think he was slightly injured, but could have played if called upon. I think with only having two left footed CB's, Pep rather had gone with Fernandinho. Ake can only play on the left and Laporte isn't as good on the right. Also Laporte is needed for his build up play so Pep made the call to put Dinho in instead of Ake. That's my opinion anyway.
