The Conservative Party

It's at one dollar.

The pound is at one f******g dollar.

When the Tories came to power, it was around £1.60 to the dollar.

It’s now around £1.05.

Do you think the Tories have done a good job?

At what level would you start to believe that maybe you’ve been a mug and the country has been sold off?

It was over $2 in 2007 ..... fell due to the financial Market crash in 2008... and has been heading downwards under the Tories ever since.

Maybe not the thread for it but related.

Out of interest, say you had a mortgage offer accepted, offer on a house accepted but were awaiting exchange/completion, would the mortgage offer stand at the rate agreed or is that still “in principle”. At what point is it no longer in principle?

It was 1.08 before the mini budget Friday, the result of which - according to the lefties - is that it trashed the exchange rate..Well patently it did not.

You do realise that criticism of this government and lamenting the gradual erosion of most people's living standards isn't an outright "leftie" position?

A lot of people are struggling to make ends meet despite being in full time work in supposedly one of the richest economies in the world. Some people are trying to buy their first home and guarantee themselves shelter so they aren't at the behest of landlords for the rest of their lives. Some of us have health concerns and can't get a GP appointment. Some of us are seeing relatives in chronic pain having their operations bumped down the list a for a third time. Some of us are worried about going cold this winter. Some of of us would simply like to be able to book an intercity train without it being a massive ordeal.

People are trying to simply live their lives and have seen their living standards or any prospect of long term financial security go rapidly backwards under Tory government whilst the rich get richer. The transference of wealth from the poor to the rich under Tory rule has been staggering and unashamed. These aren't small annoyances.

Clearly you're ok and don't give a fuck about anyone else. But a lot of us are understandably struggling with the current state of affairs and it has nothing to do with their ideological position. A lot of people don't have the luxury of taking an ideological position on these things any more. Clearly you do though given all evidence points to the fact that the country has gone backwards under Tory rule and yet you're still falling over yourself to defend them. If you want to believe that they've somehow done a good job then that's up to you, but maybe take a day off from the sneering at people who are rightfully pissed off and worried about where we're headed.

Couldn’t have said it better. Nothing further to add but your post deserves more than a like.

Post of the year. Well said sir.

That lass doing 8 hours in your local Sainsburys needs to see a work coach and become an A&E nurse. That kid filling the shelves needs to see a work coach and have it explained to him how he can deliver to his store driving a 44 tonner - however that qualified A&E nurse and that lorry driver coming over in boats are no use to us and need to be sent to Rwanda - mental

These people walk amongst us........

Just a reminder that this individual claimed £205,000 in expenses last year.

Tories eh. What are they like?

Imagine still talking about ‘lefties’ when the ‘righties’ have absolutely pulled the country down into the gutter over the last 12 years. Without question the worst run of government this country has ever had and it’s reached the point where if you’re still voting and supporting them that questions have to be asked about mental state and brain washing.

It’s kind of sad that politics has come to this. People treat it like football now where their ‘side’ can do no wrong. Boris Johnson could have abducted a child and there’d be supporters claiming the child had it coming. What’s needed is critical thinking, for people to open their eyes and look at the fall out of those last 12 years. Nobody in their right mind could possibly defend or vote for them after doing so. Never mind talk about ‘lefties’ at this stage of our decline.

It would seem that the mini budget has had an immediate impact on the pound which was presumably intentional by being helpful to pay back the extra borrowing.

Let's all hope the footsie recovers with exports being greater than the imports that are now more expensive.

Be fair. It was 7 shillings for a dollar in the 60s ($2.80 for a pound). But devaluation then was mainly because the Tories left a massive balance of payments deficit.

Since then of course governments don't have to decide to devalue, the markets just do it. Usually that means that the politicians can avoid the blame for devaluing the pound. But politicians don't usually do stuff that so obviously causes devaluation.

I don't claim to know more than experts, but I would bet my mortgage that interest rates will be nowhere near 6% by then.

But incidentally they were saying well before any hint of Friday's tax cut that rates would go to 6% or 7%,
Wrong. Before Friday, the prediction was that rates would peak at around 3-3.5% next Summer.

Presumably intentional? Did Kwarteng say that on Friday? Or even yesterday when the pound plummeted? "The pound tanking is part of the plan."

Andrew Bridgen in car crash interview on Today, blaming BoE for not raising rates last year despite Johnson saying there was no chance of inflation getting out of control. Basically it's anyones fault except the Tories!

You effectively agree to buy the product at that rate, they usually give you a few months to start it then it will elapse and you'd have to re apply.
When I bought my house it was a new built and there were delays by about 3 months. The mortgage offer was coming to an end, I contacted the provider and they agreed to extend the offer period.

I watched a video last night (can't find it now) from that well known leftie Peter Oborne. Who said that we are in a worse state than the 1970's and this was closer to the 1930. His words he said at some point the IMF are going to have to bail the UK out and then went on to say that he could a national government coming in due the incompetence of Truss.
