That's definitely happening to us. We've gone from having virtually no possession and playing on the break to dominating possession and we're struggling to create good openings when teams do to us what we used to do and sit back. We have a decent starting 11 when everybody is fit, move away from that and we struggle.

Our bench on Saturday was Botman, Lascelles, Ritchie, Lewis, Karius, Manquillo, Wood, Murphy and Longstaff. That’s 5 defenders, a keeper, Ritchie who was played more as a defender over the last 2 or 3 seasons, a forward, a winger and a midfielder.

Botman didn’t start for some reason, he should have because he’s much better than Dan Burn in every aspect of his game, Burn played Bournemouth onside to get their goal because he’s a ball watcher.

Against Bournemouth we had our best technical player(Bruno) only playing 72 minutes because he’s coming back from injury and he clearly wasn’t 100% fit. We’re also without Wilson and Saint-Maximin who are both potential game changers. I’m no fan of Shelvey but he still adds something, especially if he’s coming off the bench. We still came close to winning the game as we his the post twice and their keeper made some fantastic saves.

We didn’t have a clue what to do and we kept playing the same balls, unsurprisingly the outcome was the same. We must have some really thick footballers if they can’t work out that what they are doing isn’t working.

Hopefully we’ll have Wilson back for Fulham, Bruno is away on international duty so will get some more minutes so will come back match fit. It’s not known whether Saint-Maximin is going to be fit for Fulham and we’ll not know that until the team is named on the day as Howe keeps team selection to himself.

I still think we’ll finish the season in a better position than last season, Howe has changed our style of play massively and it was never going to click on day one of this season, he has them playing much better than I expected at this stage, even if the results haven’t been great. He’s clearly a good coach because most of our players have improved under him, some massively.

We need to spend wisely, go for quality over quantity, spend all of our money in the next couple of windows on single players who can change games. We need players who can split defences and we need pace.

My starting 11 would be Pope, Trippier, Targett, Schar, Botman, Bruno, Joelinton, Willock, Saint-Maximin, Isak and Wilson.

I would look to replace Willock first and get him on the bench. After that we need to upgrade Schar then probably Trippier because of his age. Targett will need replacing as he’s reliable but lacks pace, maybe Lewis can stay fit and put pressure on Targett as Lewis has a good performance in him, even if he doesn’t show it too often, mainly because he always seems to be coming back from an injury. Wilson will also need to be replaced sooner rather than later, he's getting on and he's injury prone which is a shame because when fit, he's a very good footballer who can score goals out of nothing.

Anyway, I'm more than happy with the progress that we're making as a club and a team, everything is going in the right direction and we don't seem to make many mistakes at club level, if any.

Good post. The bit that stuck out as being a bit negative was this;

"We didn’t have a clue what to do and we kept playing the same balls, unsurprisingly the outcome was the same. We must have some really thick footballers if they can’t work out that what they are doing isn’t working"

It used to drive me mad when City stuck to a game plan even when it seemed not to be working. Sometimes, even with injury time running out, we'd recycle the ball, play it around at the back, sideways passes anything but hoof it into the danger area. Then I realised, it's the way we play. It doesn't change, nor should it. It takes absolute confidence and control to trust the system regardless. If it doesn't work and the manager/coach wants to change the system that's up to him but the players have to deliver what he asks.

Overnight success is almost impossible now. You have to work towards it, usually by adding a quality player or two each year. City took quite a few years to become good, let alone great, after the Sheikh took over. In retrospect, patience was important for the fans. On the other side of things, management has to build a structure, and that too takes time. Rags have been trying for over a decade and have still not got there.

To draw an analogy, you need bricks to build a house - but you still need time and skill to lay them, and a set of plans so you lay them in the right place. Just having a pile of bricks is not enough.

We played really really well today with 4 starters not fit enough to start. Fulham went down to 10 men, they deserved to and could have been 2 men down. Only one team looked like winning and I don't think playing against 10 men made that much of a difference because Fulham were just really poor until the last 15 minutes.

Guimaraes was by far the best player when he was on the pitch and he ran the game until he was taken off to protect him after coming back from injury. People on here might not agree but he’s a world class player and he’s so important for us. Almiron got 2 goals and had a 3rd ruled out for a tight offside.

We made 5 changes throughout the game to give players a rest and that’s why we didn’t score more and conceded as we lost a lot of composure after making so many changes.

We had the ball in the net 6 times and hit the woodwork so it could have been a cricket score if we had really gone for it. We had close to 80% possession before taking it easy, our game has changed massively.

Get Isak, Joelinton, Targett and Saint-Maximin back, get Wilson and Guimaraes match fit and we’ll win more than we lose.

This Friday is the anniversary of the club being taken over and what a difference a year makes.

7th October 2021:

League position 19th, Played 7, Won 0, Drew 3, Lost 4, Goals for 8, Goals against 16, Goal difference -8, Points 3.

7th October 2022:

League position 7th, Played 8, Won 2, Drew 5, Lost 1, Goals for 12, Goals against 8, Goal difference +4, Points 11.

Difference year on year:

League position +12, Played +1, Won +2, Drew +2, Lost -3, Goals for +4, Goals against -8, Goal difference +12, Points +8.

That’s not too shabby really.

Moved to the North East, 18 months ago. The difference in the attitude of the NUFC fans in the pubs is remarkable.
Obviously, Ashley leaving has removed a huge shadow over them. They, justifiably, hated the leech. The ground is now, apparently, a much better and happier place as their fans hated the Sports Direct stadium.
Getting Eddie Howe as manager was a major coup, the right level of appointment. Howe's teams play entertaining football. He has signed some very good players e.g. Trippier, Bruno.
Think they will end up around 9/10th, which is a major improvement...

This time last year we were 2nd bottom and looked doomed, today we're 5th top (won't stay there) and things could hardly have been better.

You’re back ha ha, you went missing after some dodgy results….

Good luck fella, hope you get top 4 or win a pot or both.
Hopefully we’ll be able to spoil it for your neighbour’s next weekend. We have a few players who should have started today who didn’t. They can make a difference if they start. Joelinton coming in for Longstaff who is not very good and Saint-Maximin replacing Murphy who scored but didn’t play that well. Targett for Burn and we’ll give them a game. We’ve also got Shelvey almost fit and hopefully Isak back for next week so we should have a very strong starting 11.

Eddie Howe has done brilliantly and deserves a great deal of credit for the fantastic improvement in your results.

I thought he would do well for you, but I didn’t really expect him to take you so far so fast.

I think you can consider yourselves genuine top five/six contenders. Maybe even top four, especially if you can bring in one or two top quality additions I. January.

Eddie has been much better than I expected and he's been hugely impressive from day one when he came in to training at just after 6am and didn’t leave until after 7pm. He came in during darkness and left under darkness. Before Eddie took over as manager we had a team of players who couldn’t play for more than 60 minutes during a game and we sat back and hoped for a bit of magic from somebody, anybody.

We had absolutely nothing going for us and he’s changed that little by little.

At first we could see the players fitness level raise and that allowed them to do things which they sinply couldn’t do because we’d run out of steam even earlier. This season we’ve seen a sea change as we’ve gone from sitting everybody behind the ball. The only time we had players in front of the ball was when it was in our net.

We’ve evolving as a team and it will still take time because we need to learn how to break teams down at times but we’re learning and everybody is now enjoying playing for the club again.

We’ve brought new players in and we’re building a really solid spine to the team. Pope, Botman, Bruno and Isak have all improved us. Some of the players we brought in came in to do a job and were never going to be long term. Wood weakened a rival and held the ball up well for us last season which kept the ball away from out goal and allowed other players to get involved. Burn solidified our defence when we were leaking like a colander, we no longer do that but we need to phase Burn out of the team.

I would say our best 11 is Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Targett, Bruno, Joelinton, Willock, Isak, Wilson and Saint-Maximin. Add Shelvey, Almiron, Lewis, Fraser, Anderson (young kid) and we can cause problems for a lot of teams.

I hope that we can spend again in the Winter transfer window and bring in another quality, youngish, midfielder and then we need to look to get older players out of the starting 11. Schar, Trippier and Wilson are getting on and Targett is too slow. Hopefully we’ll spend on quality and we’re probably now comfortable with our numbers.

If Newcastle do eventually win a trophy they will have nowhere to keep it.
The last person to have the keys to the trophy room was Joe Harvey and he's been dead for 33 years !!

I wouldn't begrudge their long suffering supporters a trophy to cheer about.

Providing its not won at our direct expense, obviously.

Fucking deluded Geordie on 5 Live saying Howe is the best manager in the PL. Win fuck all in his career, managed Burnley to 8th and 14th, relegated Bournemouth. Top CV

He's not the best in the league but he is a very good manager and nothing you've put in your post proves otherwise.

Howe did an absolutely brilliant job at Bournemouth and the fans of the club love him.

He took over as manager of Bournemouth when he was 31 years old when Bournemouth were 10 points from safety at the bottom of the 4th division and he kept them up, he took over on New Years Eve so a lot of the season had already gone by.

Howe got Bournemouth promoted in his first full season, a season when they had a transfer embargo so couldn’t buy players. In one and a half seasons he’d taken them from 10 points adrift at the botton of the 4th division to promotion. He was spending his own personal money to help keep the club afloat.

Howe took Bournemouth from the 4th division to the Premiership where they stayed for 5 seasons when they were eventually relegated from 3rd bottom of the league. They were relegated by a single point and I’m sure that they would have stayed up if it wasn’t for a failure of goal line technology which missed a goal scored by Sheff United against Villa. Villa would have rightly been relegated if it wasn’t for that failure as Bournemouth had a better goal difference.

So far, he’s been fantastic for us.
