He was 16 and had just been picked to go on the summer tour with the first team, along with Foden. He refused to board the plane.

If he had actually gone on the tour, rather than on strike, then he may well have been given a chance.

iirc the reports assumed a different order of events:

- Sancho refuses to sign the renewal
- Pep drops him from the travelling squad
- Sancho goes on a strike

He was talented and we wanted him to stay. We offered a substantial new contract and he refused to sign it. He was dropped. For me, I am glad that is the stance we took, regardless of what he goes on to achieve. No young player should believe that they walk straight in: they may have the talent to do just that but a long-term success knows that talent is not enough - you have to fight for your place and prove that you are better than Bernardo, Sterling, Mahrez, Silva and whoever else is in your way.

Yes it would have been fantastic. I suppose at the time with the likes of Sane/Sterling/Bernardo and City chasing Sanchez he probably could not see a route into the first team in the foreseeable future. Also, and again this is only a personal perception, Pep always talks about being humble as a player, and Sancho is a little ‘big time’ so it maybe they did not click, like Pep has with other players.

It has worked out well for him and its pretty admirable how he had the confidence to uproot, move to another country, if you separate it from the unsavoury way he left.

His attitude (as perceived by City), meant he was put in the ‘shop window’ of an ‘open day’ - a few days when any players that are deemed to be surplus to requirements are ‘shown off’ to invited potential buyers. Dortmund were one of many invited, liked what they saw of Sancho on the pitch (presumably with no ‘background info’), and put in an offer, which City readily agreed to.

And then as everyone knows, City with the eye to the potential future, put in a 20% future sell-on clause, so Sancho made ‘the academy’ £5m from dortmund + £15m from united.

I would be floored if that is legit. City don't need to hold an open day to sell the likes of Sancho, the lad was tearing it up domestically and internationally for club and country. Dortmund had plenty of footage to go off.

He'd just won the u17 world cup and was one of the most highly rated u17s in world football. Dortmund knew exactly who he was.

That sounds like something that happens for lads just released from lower league academies on their last chance to make a career from football not what happens for a guy who's one of the stars of one of the best academies in the world. We didn't need to be inviting dortmund to come look at him nor would dortmund a club renowned for picking up top talents nurturing then and selling for big money be unaware of him.

Anyway, I wonder what Jadons plans are for this winter.

It wasn't just Sancho, it wasn't just Dortmund. As I said just what I was relayed.

You're right. I knew we had 3 players there i was thinking Foden Sancho and Latibeaudere, it was the keeper Anderson though!

I think I'm thinking of u17 euros where we got beat in the final, and he was superb possibly player of the tournament.

Still certain they knew who he was though.
