Hobbies for the middle aged man

Yoga...nearly all the mentioned hobbies involve you being still or with limited range of motion in your hips...if there were shops selling brand new hips theyd be a queue

Would recommend open water swimming to anyone. Probably better waiting a few months for it to warm up slightly as it's the toughest time of year now to start.

Another one as mentioned above, learn a language. Pick a culture you are interested in or a place you really want to visit. You will end up listening to podcasts, music and watching travel vlogs on YouTube as well.
open water swimming sounds great except for all the shit floating about…….

As Mr Snorky stated about fishing, how da fuck does open water swimming fit the OP's request for indoor hobbies ?

Just askin'

Yeah, I've avoided open water & sea swimming for this very reason.
I do enjoy lido swims though. Seems much less clinical than indoor swims, you get sunshine on your back & fresh air, but the water is treated.
In the summer months I regularly visit Nantwich outdoor pool & when visiting London always go to one of the many brilliant art deco lidos.

How about cooking? As I near the “kids are outta the house and I’m thinking about retiring” stage of my life I’ve realized I’ve outsourced so much food prep to my wife (who’s amazing at it) but I know very little and my assistance has been as a mere busboy/dishwasher save a very few things I do know how to cook. So I’m trying to help more as a sous chef for her to start and then onto simple things before trying more complicated stuff. An infinitely interesting hobby that also helps one’s marriage (hopefully)!

I want to learn spanish again but not sure if I should bother.
I did it at school 20 years ago but have forgotten 90% of it.
Think if I learn it again, I will just forget it all again as I won't be using it regularly so not much point.
I go Spain a bit so hopefully it will be used a little Learning a language is supposedly good for your memory.

They do speak a bit backwards the Spanish and those fucking verbs:-(

My dog is small?

:-)
