Anyone defending this clown needs to have a word with themselves.

Absolutely awful, constantly slowing play down, running into players and passing to the opposition. Even the pass for the assist was behind Haaland!

Even when he’s playing what’s considered well, he undoubtedly makes the team worse by slowing things down.

Saying all that, and the reason I give Grealish more of a pass, is the total lack of effort. At least Grealish tries, Mahrez makes no effort to retrieve the ball once he’s lost it.

When Sane was here, Pep was hammering him for much less than what Mahrez does.
One of the major differences is Mahrez is a yes man on easy street. What top player gets to his age and is happy being a bit-part player? Sterling and Jesus both wanted out because of a lack of game time, despite both playing more than Mahrez. Whereas Mahrez couldn’t sign that contract quick enough.

This is simply not true. Criticize how effective he is with the ball or his speed of play but this narrative that he doesn’t put a defensive shift in simply isn’t true. I’ve seen him numerous times bust a gut to cover space vacated by others when the ball is lost. Furthermore, Pep doesn’t suffer fools, you ain’t tracking back, you ain’t playing. That simple, it’d not like we don’t have other options on the wings.

Rubbish. How many goals come from his side because he doesn’t track back. Case in point, the goal we conceded today!

Pep for as great as he undoubtedly is, has his favourites and Mahrez seems to be one of them.

The part you’re saying about not playing if you don’t track back is a lie. He played with Robben and Ribery on the wings at Bayern and they never tracked back.

If you think Mahrez is a hard worker then you’re just plain delusional.

He definitely tracks back but he pulls out of 50/50’s and tackles. That’s a fair critique of him. That goal was 100% poor defense and a low percentage shot going in.

Let’s be real here, Everton were pretty lucky. They had 2 shots and played like crap.

I think city will catch up to arsenal and win the league. They’ve just been insanely unlucky.

One of the better players today, but that doesn’t say much. But he’s nearly as guilty as Grealish for this constant backwards passing from wide we’ve got into this terrible and boring habit of doing this season.
Mahrez seldom passed back when he was at Leicester City, so did Grealish. And they both changed their playing style a lot since joining City. As for those back passes, I think the pair just strictly followed what they were told by Pep, especially when there were no full backs overlapping on the flank.

It seems Pep prefers his winger to stick to touchline and hold the ball on their feet waiting for teammates to run into the right position. He doesn't like winger to beat defender in a 1v1 situation and as a result all the speed runners (like Sane and Sterling) have been sold. Ball possession is all he wants.

I agree it has to be acting on orders from Pep which is hugely disappointing if it is . There was acres of room outside his full back yesterday but he never utilised it .
After several scotches it also occurred to me that at Leicester he could pick out the diminutive Vardy with pin point precision but can’t seem to find the jolly green giant in our attack.
Conclusion perhaps that as with one or two players it is pep not utilising the talent properly by stubbornly playing them in a rigid pattern.!?

Grealish is actually our best player now.

Agree but Mahrez when there is anyone overlapping him he rarely passes to them he comes inside either crosses or passes back! Kdb did an overlapp totally ignored him unlike when foden plays there! With Mahrez and Grealish it’s safe safe safe first and foremost! But it’s what pep installs in the players! Seems it’s only Kdb who has license to try the risky passes and usually they come of yesterday he had a very bad day!

Been very good for us. Was alright yesterday. Won't be criticising him too much. Does need to start being phased out, though.

His contribution to the goal yesterday was reminiscent of many previous ones, but the previous ones came a little more regularly. His goal against Liverpool was a cracker, left the BBC insert into the TotY totally banjaxed, but we seem to be seeing less and less of the guy who first came.

Pep likes to collect players who have playmaker trait and change some of them into robots to follow his ball possession philosophy. It's a bit frustrated to see players always slow down the rhythm (especially loads of back passes) to keep the ball when there are obvious better choices with risk. Pep is one of the best football coaches for sure but he's more like a tyrant recently.

He frustrates me in the same way Nasri did, obviously he has talent but it appears fitfully and he doesn't work hard enough in the quiet periods, leaving the right side of our defence exposed at times.

He deserve most of the credit for the 1st goal

Should have a penalty

And provided Rodri with excellent cross but unfortunately he missed it.

I hope Pep will keep starting him.

Once he loses the high heels and mittens we'll see there's a player in there somewhere

I agree. I’ve a lot of respect and time for what he’s done with us, but his influence on matches is waning and it’s frustrating.

He was one of our better players yesterday, however.

What?

Mahrez has won four Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the League Cup three times, and captained Algeria to victory in the 2019 African Cup of Nations. He's a Champions League runner-up and has scored 4 goals in Champions League semi-finals. He's played over 200 games for City, scoring more than 60 goals. He's made over 250 PL appearances in total and has notched 78 goals in that time. He was the top scorer for last season's Premier League champions, he's won Premier League POTY and African FOTY, and he's widely regarded in Algeria as one of their greatest ever players.

He's not in good form this season and I think he needs phasing out but to act like he's never been any good is beyond preposterous.
