Winters have been generally warmer last few years which is why that cold snap was a real shocker.Agree those 3 weeks - but before that I didn’t have the heating on since first week of March !
If we have warm years like that then Gas is hardly going to be used bar a couple months in total

He works with the daily cost of gas for generation and has said for a long time that these energy companies have been taking us to the cleaners and are making huge profits. Gas suppliers will tell you they don't pay market price same day that they supply you. They have been buying gas on forward contracts over the last year so, what you get charged is a reflection of rates over the last 12 months. But they will be fleecing you on top of that rate as know one is switching suppliers anymore.See my previous post. Prices today are the same as they were a year ago. EDF sent another guy 6 months after my initial smart meter was installed and 5he electric bit has never worked, he was here 30 mins and said all done, guess what still doesn’t display electric, fucking useless.

Basically due to the structure of the market, the current high cost of some fossil fuels is dictating the price we pay for electricity. This means we’re paying way over the odds when compared to the average cost of generating electricity. The structure of the market needs to be changed and the fact that it hasn’t changed is squarely on the government who presumably have a vested interest in letting some parts of the electricity generation industry make excess profits.

I would have thought a reform of the way the market works would have been one of Sunak's priorities.After all if they teach numeracy till 18, they won't be able to pull the wool over people's eyes in 20 years time!

Probably covered in depth somewhere in this thread already, but new to me so I thought I might mention.
I’ve been with Octopus Energy and on their variable rate, which is 35.98p per kWh but I recently changed to their Agile rate.
The Agile rate is very variable, anything from them paying you a couple of pence for each kWh in the off-peak early hours and up to 35.98p per kWh at the upper level.
This incentive to use energy when others don’t helps them to balance demand across the grid to make best use of wind farm energy etc.
I thought it was a no-brainer as I can’t pay anything more per kWh than I was paying and often pay less.
I’m about a week into it and, as I have a smart meter so can track my costs as they occur, I can see that we’ve roughly halved our costs so far.
I’m not saying that everyone would do the same, we’re retired so have time to check out the ever changing half hourly charges in advance and build our usage around it, but I can’t see how it wouldn’t help others.
I recon that it’s worth looking into and that it ought to be done soon because, when I signed up they told me that it’s almost fully subscribed and they’ll shut the door to new entries in the near future.
