Needs to get up to speed quick. It's tough because the position he is asked to play is the toughest to master in a Pep system but we need Phillips.

he looks so out of place. to be fair he still looks fat to me, wonder what he looked when Pep didnt even let him into match squad.

he needs get a run of games to play and get some minutes but very much doubt he will get those as the games coming up start to become more and more important. he will hardly play in CL imo for example we cant risk carrying him.

so basically nly chances for him is when we are 2 or 3 up in a game.

Early days but a very lack lustre start to his career with us. Seems a nice guy but he needs to get down to business and get into the gym with Ruben as a mentor for a few weeks to see how to look after your body and prepare for matches.

He needs a run of games? We can't afford to give him a run of games

He is seriously not up to speed or the class City require. Rodders should have been rested after the second goal went in , pep simply has no faith in Phillips . Terrible signing just can’t see him improving anytime soon sadly .

Our build up suffers massively when Philipps plays instead of Rodri. The CB's and full-backs don't have the same passing options. Pep will be forced to play Rodri in every game.

Rodri is the best in the world for me, falls under the Rolls Royce description, so yes there will be a drop off it’s not like we are going to have the world’s 2nd best DM to cover for him.

It is clear it is there, but doesn’t seem too bad to me. He has probably a bit more pace, long passing is better but his tackling/ interceptions and reading of the game is struggling, he just doesn’t seem to know where to be as much and how to use his body.

He should get games in the cup and potentially Europe if we can get some good 1st leg results, I would also imagine regular subs in PL when game is won.

He’s got Rodri to watch and Pep to coach, I think he’ll end up being ok for us.

You spotted this in all 1.5 games of football hes played for the club?
Some of the most ridiculously negative people I've ever encountered are on this forum. One can express an opinion, fairly or, in many cases on here, unfairly, but there's an element of nastiness that's uncalled for. How the fuck is anyone going to arrive at a viable conclusion on a player coming back off long term injury, in an entirely new system, as an understudy to arguably the best player in the world at his position in about 100 minutes, 60 of them playing with arguably the worst squad we've seen in the Pep era? Some of the subject matter experts on here don't even have to see someone play. They can assess players simply by their hairstyle. The more astute ones know a player's worth simply by knowing the club they came from. Imagine how much trouble and money clubs could save themselves if they hired these experts to their scouting departments?

yeah the thing is he was replacing a 145 years old Dinho who aprt from his leadership skills had a limited role to offset the pressure and # of games to be played by Rodri but Dinho did not have the legs anymore for midfield role.
and so far even this limited role to to be able to help reduce the playing minutes for Rodri, well even this is not being done by Phillips. if anything Rodri needs to play more due to Dinho's departure.

and Leeds fans had the audacity to cry over the transfer fee was only 40m plus a youngster Gyabi.

good thing is his next season literally can only be better than this one.

one thing I remember of him from euros 2020 is his workrate was at least top notch, but I guess the loads of injuries he had since, getting fat etc., he really kind of has to build him up from zero which will be hard without playing week in week out especially when he is at a club where his technical ability is always questioned.

Needs time in the film room, watching Rodri’s movement to create angles to receive the ball or simply creating a lane for someone else.

At the moment, he’s still playing “DM Patrol,” but that position in this team is so much more, and so much more important.

His passing range is good, he has bite, and he’s got a shot on him. Once he understands the job better, we can make a more studied assessment.

In most teams, he’d get far more playing time. Sadly, this is Man City, where not only is a dropped point a sin, but he’s understudy to the best in the business…in the world!

He has a part to play giving Rodri relief this season, but needs to get up to speed, esp for next season, or we will get rid. Pep and the club have no time for passengers.

Lastly, it’ll be interesting to see what Perrone looks like. He might be a great addition to the midfield, a dud, or the end of Kalvin at City in 18 months.

Adding Perrone & Bellingham to our midfield, while losing one or both of Bernie & Gundo, would be an instant lowering of the age of our midfield. Replacing KDB is going to be the hard part going forward!

Sadly I think he's unlikely to get significant game time this season unless Rodri is injured or suspended (and obviously I'm hoping that doesn't happen) or we decide to field a weakened team perhaps for a cup match.

Needs to spend the next few months working his nuts off to be in the best physical shape he can be, training hard and working with the coaches, studying Rodri's game, building an understanding of how the team works.

Then let's get him in a proper pre-season in the summer and go again.
