Our Badge

This was the original message:

I'd love to change it to the Manchester Bee as was suggested by a fellow blue in the media thread.

Personally I never liked the eagle so glad that's gone. The ship relates to Manchester history - good or bad - so I don't mind it. I mean we are a British team and Britain used to have the biggest, arguably most brutal empire of all time so of course our history is going to be tainted... The point is it's way long ago in the past so I doubt many people actually care or have even connected the dots on the ship.

I think you’re the one getting your knickers in a twist and foaming at the mouth mate.
The bee is a worker bee which is female which I’m now offended as I work and I’m a male .
I could comment on empires but not going to on a football forum regarding city.
Where does this madness end ? .
Great result tonight on the verge of something what could be absolutely unbelievable for us I’ll leave this there.
Great night , great support from the lads and lasses out there in Germany.

Up the blues.

For me if you’re offended by a fucking worker bee because you’re male that’s hilarious and probably worse than anyone offended by a ship that has historical connections to the slave trade! Hahah. Jesus the sensitivity of folk.

Regardless I’m not offended by either symbols so I feel I’m winning at life!

But I agree with your last sentiments. Whatever badge we have we still have the same amazing team, same brilliant manager and we’re in with a good chance at the treble! That’s all I care about really. Night blues.

It was in irony mate mate my first comment regarding a male worker. … which I hope most got.

Personally I’d like a bloke in a camouflage coat selling half time draw tickets as a badge.

Those who’ll know Will know;)

Erm no… haha. I literally say I don’t mind the ship symbol. How can I be triggered and simultaneously not dislike the said cause of anguish? Haha. You doughnut.

Anyway I was responding to another poster who suggested the Manchester bee would be a good alternative and I agreed… I do love that symbol more than the ship - just a personal preference mate, nothing to do with politics! For me the bee represents modern Manchester. Sorry that’s offended you.

You can keep using the word triggered and the whole candle obsession you have going on but it won’t change the fact you seem to be the snowflake here. I don’t know why it upsets you that the British empire WAS one of the biggest and one of the bloodiest? It’s a fact my friend. And I don’t think either of us were involved so don’t take it personally. Although I am starting to question how old you are…
Great idea.. next step is the bee being linked to the cotton industry and then slavery or something equally daft.

Bees? Manchester town hall used to have, maybe still does, a pattern of bees inlaid in the marble tiles of the entrance hall. Symbols of the wealth made in the Industrial Revolution when the city was "the workshop of the world."

Still prefer the ship though.

The guardian have done their job, deflection in full motion.

If you want to be offended by it, you will. If society wants us to eliminate every link to our past rather than just acknowledging it then it’s going to a rather deep rabbit hole.

Now my response would be, yes it’s possible & just goes to show how supply chain is impacted by slavery. Going forward we’ll sign up up to the “modern human slavery” & ensure that we are audited & comply that there is no slavery in our supplier chain.

However, first thing is changing Manchester from its Roman slave master name……

An interesting, well-balanced piece in the Guardian today, written by a blue, discussing the origins of the ship on our badge, and it's links to slavary in the cotton fields of America.

Not read this piece but there has never been a well balanced piece in the Guardian. The rag simply peddles woke shite.

You really are rattled by one little article haha
Well, that’s already the second article on it. And neither are little, the first was huge.

Next thing will be moaning about the Lancaster Rose and what negative connotations it has, after that Big Bananas and it being racist to wave them about, after that it could be that the Man in Manchester is sexist because it means a breast…

Anything the Guardian can get its nails into moan about City or the Sheikh, they fucking love it.

The fact is that the ship does not signify slavery, it simply signifies trade. And that twat of a writer of the article is just being a **** about it to get clicks from football fans who don’t like City or United or people who don’t like Manchester or people who love slave shaming shit.

Are we supporting the 3 rivers in their conquest to wash through our city? The floods, the buried washed from Phillips Park, the lost footballs that float away hopelessly...

Time to strip the rivers away. Besides climate change. Surely inevitable river is enough.

I’ve always taken it to be a symbol of the ship canal, I’m sure the club’s press releases usually say the same thing.

The current version of the crest is probably the most popular with ourselves it’s ever been. The eagle design didn’t sit well with about 40 to 50 percent of fans, but I don’t think there’s anyone that doesn’t admire the current design. A modern take on a classic, done classy.

If the ship was for whatever reason swapped out for the worker bee, and the rest stayed the same, I’d be fine with it. I’ve always been quite attached to the worker bee as a symbol, I liked the black and yellow away kit (09/10 was it?) because it was supposedly meant to reflect the worker bee, it’s a symbol with just as much history for the city.

Other than this article, I think it’s safe to say nobody is pushing to get rid of the ship from any of the three emblems it features on. Certainly part of Manchester’s trade and industry for a long time was built on those foundations, but it was never the sole element of our trade and industry even at it’s height. I see a ship; it could be carrying potatoes, paint, persil or people, whether in chains or seated comfortably.

I do want to remember history, good and bad, I don’t want to glorify the bad parts. I do agree with taking down statues of enslavers, but would be happy for them to be relocated into museums that accurately describe the character of those people.

The ship doesn’t represent the same thing in my eyes as those statues. If it was at any time meant to do so, then it wasn’t as blatant or obvious.

I doubt much traction will be made of this, but if it did blow up into the latest frenzy, I think the board would consider minor changes to avoid another stick to beat our image with.
