Champions League Final | Istanbul or could it be moved?

i wouldn’t read too much into that statement. At this stage theyre probably wary of pulling the plug on Istanbul prematurely and leaving themselves open to a large legal claim. my guess is that they’ll wait until after Sunday’s voting. If it looks like a comfortable win for Erdogan they’ll genuine confirm it’s staying put in Istanbul. If Erdogan looks like losing or it’s going to be very close they’ll take soundings from sponsors and other interested parties (obviously not the fans) and make a decision whether to shift it at the end of next week

Exactly. They’ll need a reason to move it, can’t just say they think something might happen and change it. I think that the idea is out there then it’s on the cards if anything happens over the weekend/Monday.

What is the alternative at this point?

Keep it in a city with massive protests and soldiers and tanks on the streets (if that happens, of course)?

I can get behind the arguments that all of this should have been avoided. We all know UEFA are corrupt and incompetent in equal measures.

But any arguments that fans didn’t know the risks when booking ahead (or waiting to book) fall flat for the reasons I have already explored.

This is not a shocking development; the writing has been on the wall for a long, long time.
I booked my flight on 10th June last year. I'm the first to admit I'm not big on Turkish politics so my apologies for not for seeing an election 11 months later that could/may cause issues.

Have posted earlier in this thread and have to own up to playing down any potential threats. Looks like Erdogan is trailing in the polls and unless he somehow manages to win it on Sunday (>50%) things can turn really nasty after a run-off on May 28th. Can see it moved by UEFA at the eleventh our leaving thousand of fans out of pocket. If you're not one of "UEFA friends", they probably won't give a damn about you.

Someone I know who applied in the ballot got an unsuccessful email from UEFA for the CL final, so the process is still ongoing for IST

I would suggest you squarely fall in the “you knew the risks” camp that applies to anyone booking anything 11 months in advance, especially when it comes to a final in a knockout tourney. ;-)

I had Paris booked with free cancellation last year and then the fuckers at City decided not to make it! Still not had the thumbs up from my mrs for this one so unless it does move I'm out unfortunately.

I knew the risks in terms of a city qualification yes as our intention was/is to still go to Istanbul for a 4 day break if City didn't make the final however if they do now and it gets moved then we will obviously go to follow City wherever that is so we will lose out and I maintain we couldn't have forseen in June last year this possibility unless you are heavily into Turkish politics which I am not.

It is what it is I will have no option but to accept a change I have not said its a piss take as fully accept that safety would have to come first but I don't agree with your interpretation that any City fans booking knew the risks so has no right to moan. It may well be that if the government advise against travel we can claim back on insurance we will see.

I just hope UEFA make a decision ASAP so as not to cause huge inconvenience to a large number of people.

I was going to suggest requesting refund on the basis of government restriction on travel if they do advise against entering Turkey and hope that is an option for you and all blues in this situation!
