United (N) | FA Cup Final | Post-Match Thread

At the end of the day, the referees' decision is final. He/she can overrule var when appropriate.
The other option is mob rule/ who screams loudest.
And up step the fans claiming corruption, & pundits saying the ref made a grave error & should be removed from officiating.

How many times have we seen this scenario this season, followed by PiGMOL apologies?

Sorry if it's already been asked, but why was the attendance only 83k?
I know there was some segregation on the halfway line, but couldn't have been 7k seats covered..?

Agreed. HOWEVER we tried this method & there were howls of complaints, no less from City fans where a ball struck Otamendi's hand which was by his side in a CL match, which cost us a penalty & the game IIRC.

The game's governing body changed the rules again & now we're at the "arm in a natural/unnatural position" rule. \0/

Whatever suggestions have been put forward, they're fraught with issues. With the natural/unnatural position, it's natural to raise your arm whilst jumping to gain leverage & for balance, so arms being up in the air whilst jumping is natural.

Again, we had a penalty appeal denied because the covering defender was running parallel to an attacker & when the cross was made it struck the arm of the defender.

It was interpreted that the defender's arm was in a natural position for someone running at full pelt, & the proximity of the shot to the arm was way too close for the defender to do anything about it.

It was also said it was "ball to hand, NOT hand to ball" & it was the opinion of VAR there was no handball intent which is all about interpretation & opinion.

I've honestly no idea how we resolve this to everyone's satisfaction. We're having this discussion because of the penalty awarded against Jack, but as soon as I saw the replay, I knew it was a penalty by the letter of the current law.

Now if we were 1-0 down in a final & it was Walker heading the ball across ManUre's area & it similarly struck Sancho's hand, we'd be fuckin livid & claiming PiGMOL had a CONspiracy against us if they never applied the letter of the law & awarded the penalty!

I've no idea how this can be resolved. The penalty award was harsh because what else was Jack supposed to do?
Q. Did the ball, after hitting Jack's arm, deflect sufficiently to give us an advantage which we wouldn't otherwise have got?

The clue might be in your username…

But that doesn’t explain the United empties.

There was a section of about 2x6 in the posh united side seats behind the bench pitchside that was empty all game

Yes. I watched the match back on Sunday (not for the penalty incident), but the replays clearly show the ball hitting the fingers of Grealish, then slowing down with an upward trajectory.

As I said previously, how many times have we seen a shot hit the post, but on replay it shows the slightest of touches from the keeper deviated the ball enough that it bounced out to be cleared, whereby without keeper intervention, it would've probably hit the post & gone in?

At high speeds, the slightest contact is enough to deviate a ball by an inch or two, which could be the difference between hitting the bar or looping in over the keeper?

By the letter of the law it was a penalty. Now whether the law is fit for purpose, is another matter altogether. Both Alistair Mann & Michael Brown thought the same as me as soon as they saw the replay.

Also, if this happened the other way around, we'd be apoplectic with rage if it wasn't given, regardless of how harsh the award was.

A pen it was then.
'Soft' certainly, but a pen. nonetheless.
VAR was brought in to ensure that no mistakes were made during matches though.
So why no intervention over the foul on Kev, Casemiros' ott wild tackle or several other (Fred) incidents in the match?

With the KDB penalty claim & the ankle breaker on Akanji, I have no idea why VAR didn't intervene.

Casemiro should at the very least been an 'orange' & he couldn't have complained if it was a straight red.

As for Kev, the only thing I can assume is the ManUre player's leg was planted as KDB was going for the ball, so it was interpreted that the defender got their first, very similar to another penalty claim recently denied to KDB too... \0/

But it wasn't, fred clearly moves across and blocks Kev's run with an outstretched leg, taking him down, not Kev running into a stationery planted leg...

Are they allowed to replay the game because of the dress code? :)

At least they won the fashion contest!

I would love if this was done on purpose by us. They don't respect us(referees, allegations, etc) so we answer them with that way. Next time please wear swim shorts please!

Haha. I didn’t know this but I’m going to guess this was done on purpose to keep the players relaxed and in “just another game” mood. Well done City. The little things can matter.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. Sat with mum now showing her the movies we took, though she's mostly asleep and the quick visit from the carers is soon. She stood up briefly with the home physio team today which is brilliant, her first time out of bed since rushed to hospital February 15th. It's still a few days at a time, but there's hope there will be more months left, and it's still two fingers to that hospital who moved her to end of life care telling us she had days to live - in March. Lay in bed on oxygen in a hospital bed in her own lounge is better than being in that place.. 5 weeks in that place and condemed by them to "hours, days a week left at most" after 4, but now had 10 weeks at home with her. Though me and my sister never expected to be live in carers... But here we are.. So time with my boy and my "normal" life is precious, as is being with mum.. I wish there were two of me.. And I'm trapped between looking to the future for my son and seeing the past all the time as my mum fades, whilst trying to be in the now without having a breakdown.. And so desperately trying to get into the "treble" feeling as city have been my life, this is huge huge, it matters so much to me.. But cos of it being right now, it's just spinning my head. And I know I'm mentioning it in many of my posts, but we're deeply traumatised really.

Anyway, enough doom. Just wanted to say thanks. My son says he didn't "repeat any bad words" at school today so that's good! He enjoyed the final and I was so proud to take him, so proud, I missed mum with me, but cried for many reasons when it sunk in we were going to win. I was his age for the 81 final (no one took me but I remember the day clearly) and here I was with my longed for much loved son at the fa cup final (my 16th trip, his 1st). Wish it was him WITH my mum rather than instead of her, wish they were either side of me, but mum was in my head and heart. We had a brilliant day though, I felt truly happy.

Long shot I kniw, but does anyone have one of the official all blue city cup final scarves they were selling in wembkey, they were £20. I got one for my 6 yr old but mum wants one and I messed up by not bringing one home. She could have his, but having it in bed it will get stained with food and probable wee, so even when washed he doesn't want it back, so I think I've failed as a daughter AND as a Mum in one go there! :(

What a way to win though. And that goal, that start - fuck me! And laughing at the rags will never get old :)

This post brings back a lot of memories of the last few months with my Mum before she passed away. Very hard to manage things and the football is often a nice break from the hard reality where you can be in this bubble. Unlike most, it was my Mum who took me to Maine Road for the first time and not my Dad! I don't have a scarf but hopefully someone can sort you out one, or you can get a similar one online. Keep plugging away and try to have those conversations with your Mum that you need to. I miss mine everyday, despite it being so horrific for her in the end I still wish she was here. You're doing an amazing job both as a child and a parent.

Just means we where relaxed about the occasion, and getting in & out of a suit on a hot day is a load of faff, we definitely did do it on purpose but that’s down to our meticulous planning & probably not two fingers to the established, sliders & swim gear would cause an uproar, I’d like to see it!

They should have piled all those nice suits in the back of the net. Might have done a better job of keeping the hall out of the net than their sorry excuse for a keeper.
