Pearce wasn't our worst manager but his team played the worst football to watch. We have had some truly dreadful teams over the years but they were not negative and boring like the Pearce era.

He was definitely up there as one of our worst.

Compare that to Royle, Sven or Mancini who all might argue they were treated much more unfairly than Pearce but still speak of us in positive terms

Might have something to do with the fact Royle, Sven and Mancini were actually proper managers with a bit of professionalism about them.

The 80s and 90s clearly bypassed you. Benson, McNeill, Frizzell, Clark, Neale, Coppell, Ball. Pearce was bad, no arguments there, but some of them were way worse.

I met Pearce once when he was playing at West Ham - he was in a coffee shop in Leadenhall Market Near the City. Chatted to him briefly Thought he was a right obnoxious twat. Never warmed to him at City.

I think he had a fall-out with John Wardle over the England U-21 job. John Wardle is one of the most humble and nicest people you could meet but that apparently enraged him, particularly when we weren't safe from relegation at the time and I think it was presented as a fait accompli. Whether Pearce would've been sacked anyway I don't know but that definitely didn't help.

I also believe that Mackintosh, the CEO at the time, was shitting himself about the financial impact of relegation, and was actively canvassing for Pearce to be sacked and an interim manager appointed. I was told a name at the time but can't remember who. I'd guess Pearce would have been aware of this, which obviously wouldn't have pleased him greatly.

I do wonder if he and Mackintosh had words. Mackintosh as CEO, by the way, was little better at his job than Pearce was as manager.

MacIntosh is like those failed ‘proper football men’ managers on the Allardyce/Ball/Bruce treadmill in that he still somehow continues to get jobs in football governance despite some horror stories Ive heard about his conduct at City

Pep would have done no better with that team. He might be a twat now but he played his part in keeping the club up at a time when it could have dropped out of the PL again, with potentially existential consequences.

A list showing desperation if ever there was one. But weren't Benson and Neal caretaker managers, and Coppell might as well have been.
I wasn't sure about Billy McNeill until I remembered he helped take two teams down in 86-87. @Magicpole may have other views.
