Aymeric Laporte

I think overall Laporte is fantastic but he has become a casualty of Peps defensive changes. Pep used to accept defensive errors as an inevitability of his defenders playing out from the back. In a large majority of games this was fine but how many times did we see these defensive errors cost us in big games?

Pep has become a lot more pragmatic and he wants the defensive lapses that both Laporte and Cancelo were susceptible to eradicated, even if the trade-off is our defenders not being as progressive in possession. I don’t believe that a couple of years ago Pep would have ever preferred Ake over Laporte but he certainly does now. I would hazard a guess that is why Gvardiol is top of Peps wanted list…defends as well/better than Ake and is also up there with Laporte with the ball at his feet.
Sensible take but also throw in the fact that Laporte and to a lesser extent Cancelo are not hugely quick and can't recover if they make an error one on one on the half way line. As you say, this has been costing us.

I'm amazed at the lack of interest, its truly bizarre. Not many clubs have better.
Even wanting to go, I'd guess not many clubs can pay anything close to Premier League wages, and there may not be many clubs he'd consider anyway.

I suspect it's going to become a bigger "problem" for Premier League teams, as the clubs that can compete with even mid/lower-table PL clubs is getting smaller each year.

My surprise includes PL clubs.

Don't think it is a lack of interest. Think it is more clubs keeping cards close to their chests to get more of a bargain the later on it goes. Even at 50m, some club will get a bloody bargain and one hell of a defender. But go in early, and we can look for a fair price.

PL clubs I think are a non-starter. He won't be dropping a level, and will want a top club (which is us in the PL) and abroad is his beat option. Same applies to Saudi.

What about the boys in the Middle East they are spreading the cash big time

Pep just said we may require 6 CB's in the upcoming season. Does that mean Laporte is staying or was Pep referring to Walker as a CB?

I take his words that he saw 6 CB is not to many rather than he absolutely required 6 CB for next season.

Which means if Laporte is going i think Pep still satisfied with 5 CB.

I only see him going back to Bilbao this window really.. He doesnt want to take a step down in the PL he has communicated that many times before to City and City dont want to sell him to a competitor either really so. Real Madrid has stopped spending unless on young wonder kids as showed here the last few seasons.

They just dont spend on defence, and go for free transfers like Alaba/Rudiger to regenerate that defence after the Pepe/Ramos/Varane era.

Barca has just drafted in a LCB in his place where he was a candidate for the last few seasons, but Barca never had the money to spend on an older CB.

PSG doesnt seem that interested and Bayern has just stacked with Kim there. Maybe Atleti very late in the window.. but I dont see it.

Maybe Aymeric changes his mind and takes a step down in the PL though.. like mid-table, but I dont see it.

edit:
I believe Laporte will wait for the last 10 days or so for offers from the top Euro clubs and then start the move to Bilbao, they have been pushing for a while and have the resources for his wages and he can set up his life there again until he retires with a high wage cos they wont let him go if they get him. I believe they will pay a decent transfer sum as well, but they are pretty hard in negotiations. All this can change of course if he decides to go to Saudi now.. he can always go back to Bilbao later then as the talent pool of current and future players are very limited cos of their (recruitment) policy.

If Luis Enrique starts to push for him he will go to PSG though.

The question was about the 6 CBs
Dias, Stones Akanji
Laporte, Ake, Gvardiol

That's the 6. The way he answered the question Gave me the impression he wasn't gonna say "we are trying to sell X." In other words, if we can't sell X, we are okay going with 6.

But deep down, you know we are trying to move Laporte. And Laporte is trying to move.

He already wasn't cool with being 5th choice. No way he is staying to be 6th choice.

It's not one thing, it's a bunch. He can get more playing time, which he craves. We can get a better fit for the squad going forward. Gvardiol seals the deal. Opportunity to bring in another right footer might appear, and that will mean Pep and others are motivated to make this happen.

A, he was never 5th choice, he won't be 6th either. That would mean we play with only one CB, which we don't. Most of the season we have played with 3. Which makes him at worst 2nd choice.

B, nobody 'knows' we are trying to move Laporte, there is nothing to suggest we are doing that. He may well want to leave, however, and it makes sense. But can't take it for granted the club want him out.

Only position Laporte can play in our new system is as the central CB in the 3.

The Laporte situation baffles me to no end.
How does a Spanish international, brought up from the school of Pep Guardiola a treble winner and one of the best lb in the world and I only read Bilbao and Spurs interest and yes the Crystal Palace interest!

Don’t top European clubs don’t need a world class CB no more. Inter, Milan, Dortmund, PSG, Bayern do they have enough world class CBs?
I am not saying he would go, isn’t Laporte a big name for the Saudi’s to invest in him.
Amazed at the lack of rumours for Laporte!
