88m is pushing it a more sensible fee would in my opinion be 60-70 mil but i underatand how inflated the market is, if they want over 90 mil walk away i say.

Crazy fee and one City won’t pay based on how we conduct ourselves in the market. If the price does not reflect the players quality walk away. My only hope here is that both clubs seem to have a good relationship and the hammers may want 1/2 of our lads.

So not walk away at £88 mill , walk away at £90 mill. How about £89.25 mill? Guessing arbitrary figures we will or won’t pay is pointless.
 
where 90% of fans these days are high level accountants in football economics of course it matter what the fee is especially with the braggin rights of " we have a net spend of 50m vs your 80m you loser"...

if the yearly amortization fee for Paqueta is 15m or less we are ok, if a penny more I want us to walk away. :)

You’ll both notice that the one doesn’t exclude the other. In fact, they’re complementary.
 
Very strange fee. I was surprised at £70m but could get my head around it, if it stretches to £95m then I do struggle with that.
 
Who knows what's said in negotiations. Anyone got the bid? No.

Take two potential bids.

Bid of 110m:

16m within 30 days.
8m every July for three years starting next year.
10m for every hundred appearances, up to 20m.
2m for each PL title, up to 10m. 5 m for each CL win, up to 20m. IF he plays 50% of matches in the relevant comp.
Palmer and MacAtee on loan all season, no backsies, WH have the right to buy for 30m each, combined loan fee of 20m to be refunded in that case. Refund halved if you finish top 6 or win a cup. Or if either accrue over 3000 minutes and 15+ goal involvements.
You need to negotiate termination of Paqueta's contract - I have no involvement with that!
Plus cover his agent and any other expenses.
Oh yeah, any preexisting medical conditions found during his time with us, voids all future payments.
We might be able to include Philips. He's valued at 55m.

vs

Bid of 70m:

£45m cash within 12hrs of deal being finalised.
£12m a year next year and year after, unconditionally.
Palmer on loan, no right to buy, City right to recall, understanding this would be a last resort if he wasn't getting any game time. Understanding the deals can likely done for ~30m if both teams are happy. Loan fees valued at £1m for the purposes of the deal.
Paqueta agrees to recind all claims for contractual payments against WHAM.
City have no further claim, once medical is reviewed.

Which can you accept? The first one is a wind up. A shaggy dog story. West Ham could actually end up with close to zero. But it's a headline of 110m. The second is hard cash and further cashflow, and no liabilities.

Once swaps are involved - and there's a chance they are - then valuation becomes very difficult.

Chill. This is negotiation. You bid a little. They want more. You bid more. They want more. Zzzzz. Get to a deal, and you still have to negotiate conditions.

Now try this. Bid. Not enough? Put in a 'big' bid. Big, potentially. Stuffed with conditions. They say... woah... too many conditions. Cash now. So at the right time, you offer less, but paid upfront, close to unconditionally. Cheeks knows the score. City know how to do this, make this stuff ok for people.

Surely you can see this does not seem the usual way we do business.

I would put Gvardiol and Kovatic as prime examples.

The fact there is talk of a season out injury sparking this bid, although I have no idea if that is true or not shows that we are acting differently to normal.

This is a deal that could have been done for cheaper and easier if talks had started earlier in the season and also given Pep a pre-season with him.

I would argue both Liverpool signings seem more the way we normally do business for a CM and that possibly we would bave been better going for them. MacAllister especially seems a very good fit for us at a great price.

We are light in the squad and the extra games and longer game time, we have decided to try and get a player on the eve of the season. What has sparked that who knows, I don’t think we have panicked over the late goal but it might have been thought more need to freshen up during the game as the games are a bit longer.

In regards to panic buy I don’t think we do that, I imagine we have the data, scouting reports and due diligence already done. However, I also imagine 1-2 weeks earlier we where not necessarily expecting to bid for him.

You can also add Akanji into this category.

And to answer your q, no not all but some purchases as we get towards the end will be panic buys (replacing players, injury’s etc).

Some not, prime example could be if Kane moves. Bayern may get him late in the window but he was targeted early and it is just the time it takes. Be interesting who Spurs sign and if this is planned or a panic buy.

Sometime opportunities develop later , as Dias did. Does it matter if he’s a player we want now for whatever reasons. There was no injury so that wasn’t a spark.
I would suggest, but only a guess, Bernardo and Walker decisions becoming clearer crystallised how and what we wanted for the squad, and maybe deciding we wanted Bernardo and Foden as our main Mahrez replacements.
