Injuries - 2023/24 | Ederson cleared to return to training (p 146)

Absolutely no sympathy for Pep. It’s his decision to run with the league’s smallest squad despite us being in 7 competitions this season. Everyone knew this was going to happen.
We got very fortunate last season that the only attacking player we had absent for any amount of time all season was Foden with an injury, then appendicitis, then an operation and recovery from that and then another knock again.

This season already, it’s been one after the other after the other.

If that carries on, every trophy we are fighting for becomes more difficult to win.

The teams who win trophies are usually the teams who have the least injuries or the teams who can cope with having injuries through having a deeper squad.

I can see why Pep likes a small squad who play all the time (at Barça he barely ever rotated anyone! he had a bigger squad before we bought Doku and Nunes at City this Summer than he used to have at Barça) because it builds form and consistency and with that, if they stay fit, it’s more likely they’ll win.

It’s a fine line though because if they do get injuries, the team is impacted massively.

The small squad might affect us but the club went to great lengths to get best medical team. This was an interesting article I read about behind the scenes.

We might get extra players in January depending on how we fare reported by Tolmie on Twitter.

The last game showed me how much we miss John Stones. In my opinion, more than anyone. His skill to bring the ball into midfield is huge in overload terms. No matter the wonderful player that Ruben is, he simply does not have that in his locker in the same way.

Is it that much smaller than last season really? You could argue we had better quality last season but time may show that the ones we bought in are better than those that left. But in terms of numbers.
Out
Laporte Gundogan Palmer Mahrez
In
Gvardiol Bobb Kovacic Nunes Doku
What am I missing?

To be fair we were very lucky last season with injuries, if we had lost Kev and any other highly experienced players Gundo or Bernie for a few months we wouldnt have won what we did.
You're always gonna get players picking up knocks and being out for a couple of weeks and you can cope with that if you have the quality, but for the last few weeks we've had no Kev, Bernie, Grealish or Stones and no Rodri (admitted due to a bit of stupidity).

The injuries this year are as a result of both last seasons achievements and the world cup.

We also know that new players take a good 6 months to bed into Pep's style of football. What we should have done was landed maybe a Nunes or Doku last season in preparation for Gundo and Mahrez going but the offers for them wrongfooted the club meaning that they left earlier than anticipated.

Great to have all but De Bruyne fit and available now. If we can beat Arsenal then it's been a great start to the season. It might not have been too tough on paper, but we tend to start slow and drop points and to be top after 8 games considering we've had Rodri, Bernardo, Stones, Grealish and De Bruyne out - all of whom started the CL final - that's pretty good going.

Things then hot up in the league following the international break, but having a fully fit squad will help drive us forwards and means we can ease in the new players rather than throw them straight in and hope they can perform.

Stones back for Arsenal and able to move into midfield will hopefully help lessen Rodri’s absence. Silva back too and maybe Saka out for them. Let’s get through tomorrow first but feeling more hopeful.
I would love for Stones to be fit to start but seems very unlikely given how long he's been out for... Bernardo pretty sure to start. Of course if Stones gets 30 minutes off the bench tonight there could be a chance to start against ars. Having bernardo and johnny back in starting line-up would strengthen us massively...
