Has anyone put their central heating on yet?

Miss the open fire we had as kids, and probably one of the only ways that we've regressed from the past. Pain in the arse cleaning out the grate in the morning, but nothing like the feel of direct heat on your bones.

Central heating's fine but it's a different kind of heat. Having said that, no more frosted up windows in the morning.

Dead right. My Mum used to get my sister and I (the two youngest) to make ‘balls’ out of newspapers to put under the coal, we didn’t use firefighters, then put the gas poker up to the grate. Put the coal shovel with a sheet of the Evening News, because it was a broadsheet, to the fire and light the poker. You knew the coals were lit when the newspaper was on fire, haha. Make sure the damper was down to heat the water. I remember it all so well.

£800 in the kitty

Reduced bills from £120 to £60 to chop it down a bit and using it more this year with newborn and toddler.

Whilst working from home I refuse to have the heating on, I just wrap up wel, my Mrs is always freezing tonight the heating blasting out and the log burner going full pelt me and the dogs had to out cool down, she’s wrapped up like an artic explorer

Been snowing here for 24 hrs on and off and below zero at night. Predicted to carry on for at least another 24 hrs - blasting out the BTU's day and night. No point in having central heating if you don't driving is fun (not) too

Right a question for all you experts, where do you put your room thermostat. I have TRVs on every radiator apart from the he hallway, I’ve put the room stat in the hallway however that room will never get to temperature, looking online it says put in the coldest room (hallway) and don’t have a trv on that radiator as it will compete with the room stat.
However, if I do this, the boiler will basically be on all the time as it tries to get the hallway to temperature on the room stat. If I put it in the living room, it will easily get to to temperature and switch off, cool down then switch on as it should. The living room radiator has a TRV on it. What is the right way? The experts say coldest room no TRV but then the boiler doesn’t go off at all, living room TRV will get to temp, fucked if I know!
We are both at home all day and it actually costs £1 more to heat the house all day than a couple of hours in the morning and a couple of hours at night, as once it reaches temp (stat in living room) it just tops up.
I’d like a reply to this too. Also do you turn these TRV’s up to 5? Or do you have them at a lower number?

Electricity usage has gone up a bit due to it being darker sooner, the cold weather. the portable oil filled radiator, electric blankets on the bed and in the living room, showers, washing machine, and the tumble dryer, as it too cold to hang the clothes on the drying maiden. Gas is steady bar the spikes for a bath. £360 in credit. I’m quite proud of the flat line gas readings, bar the spikes, explained.

Question.

Has anyone had solar panels installed on the roof? Is it worth the initial cost, 5k upwards, and are you saving much money, and making much money by selling spare electricity back to the energy company? I’m thinking of having them installed next Spring. Thanks.

We bought a dehumidifier, 8p an hour to run dried clothes on about 5 hours cheaper than the tumble dryer
